Most will be w/sown this year or direct sowed. I'll do the coleus inside.
Seeds 2013 Whatcha growing??
Planted on 2 / 1 / 2013 and today I have sprouts on.....
Wizard Coral Sunset
Wizard Scarlet
Wizard Pineapple
Superfine Festive Dancer
This year, I would like to try Stock from seed. What are your recommendations both on suppliers and the experience of the seeding?
I love the scent from Stock.
I buy Stock every spring but Allison grows it from seed. If I remember right, it takes a while to grow.
I too love the smell of stock. :)

Yes, I agree....stock is very fragrant.....I usually buy a plant or 2 if I see them, have never grown them from seed....
I did stock a couple of years ago. As I remember, it needs dark to germinate so I clustered the seeds in a 4" pot in dampened seed starting mix, put it in a plastic bag, put it in a warm cupboard and checked it regularly until it sprouted. I went by the info on the label for timing. When the sprouts got a little bigger I separated them into cells and put them under lights.
I didn't keep a journal that year, so don't know the details of germination, etc, but I do remember that I had some plants that summer.
Good luck!
All the coleus are up!!!!!!! Yippee!
Most of these seeds were last years that I didn't get to plant so im extremely pleased they all sprouted!!
That's great Celeste!! I can't wait to see some green.
I finished up the coleus and am trying lantana for the first time and a few daturas. Found some petunias I forgot last year so got them started too.
Pretty! Do you use rooting powder, or just put the cuttings in water?
Looking good Celeste! Love the Kiwi, looks ruffly.
I have a lot of green showing too, makes it feel a bit warmer doesn't it! I'll have to get a few shots.
Did 28 containers so far for winter sowing, I have my friends and neighbors saving milk jugs for me. I'm sure they all think I'm a bit odd. Just like non dog owners, non gardeners just don't get it...
Wow Ronnie! 28 containers? What-cha growing? :)
Robin I just put them in a vase of waters for a week or two and they root. KIWI FERN has been growing since last spring so I am able to get several cuttings from it. I almost lost one this winter called MARDI GRAS but i was able to take a few cuttings, it's one of my favorites, splashed with deep purple/maroon.
2nd picture is a Lavender Geranium the SEED QUEEN (Allison) grew last year and gave it to me. It was a tiny baby when she brought it to me in June. I planted it outside and let it grow. When my brother died I forgot about it and almost lost it as it was still outside in Oct.!! I dug it up, trimmed it and babied it all winter long....SO GLAD I DID!! Isn't it beautiful??!!
Very pretty & delicate.....my coleus has wintered well in the basement, but I will start to take cuttings now....noticed my colacasia is sending up new little leaves!
Ronnie, I have about the same amount of jugs outside so far. They're all perennial seeds. Have you put out any tender ones yet (annuals or perennials)?
Pretty geranium Celeste, I used to save mine all the time, just ran out of room.
I'm up to about 60 containers now, lots of older seeds I wanted to try, and some odd ones I got in a trade I was in, if they don't work not much lost other than my time. I reuse all my dirt so that isn't even an expense.
Terri I'm just starting my tender annuals now, I'll do some in containers and some direct sowing.
I marked each container with a mini blind the wrote them down, all but one wasn't marked and of course that's the one that sprouted. At first I thought they were the poppies but now it looks like portulaca.
I'm going to W/S some tomatoes, never tried it before but the W/S forum says it works great. I sent for some heirlooms from Winter sow.org for 5 bucks, I'll see how it works.
Inside stuff is doing good so far. My snaps are leggy not liking the look of them but the coleus are doing better this year than last. The caladiums are all started but no growth yet on them.
Do you guys pot up or just keep them in the flats till it's time to go out?
I try to pot up some & keep some in flats.....all my sprouts are looking good, but I think they'd look better if I could get them outside for awhile.....I only planted 7 this year.....can't imagine trying to keep track of 60!
Thanks, Ronnie. There's some cold weather coming, but I think I'll set out the tender Winter Sow now, anyway. I'll group them all together so that I can throw something over them at night.
I used lots of pots this year instead of all flats. This eliminates some of the potting up and looking for more space. I think I will have to pot up the 'Saliva Patens Blue Angel that are in flats because they are really out growing the flats. I've already potted up the Magic Fountain Delphiniums and the Calendula, Orange Geraniums, Lisianthus and Petunias.
another thread I missed sorry.. just to jump in.. I tried the stock twice from seed.. they took forever to grow.. never saw a bloom from them.. yes I will always buy from plants now
I just finished the last tweak of my city set-up. All the lights are T-5's, but the ones over the middle shelf are only half as strong as the others. I got them from HD 2years ago, didn't realize there would be such a big difference. Even using foil as a reflector there is no comparison.
Pic 2: I have all shade lovers under them now, Alchemilla, Campanula, Digitalis and the like. This year all my plants seem much sturdier and more compact than in the past, even those. I think it must be the light.
Pic 3,4,5: Lots of Platycodons on the top shelf, several Dianthus and a smattering of other singles and doubles.
We're leaving on Thursday for a few days, most everything should be germinated by then, I hope, Nicotianas, and Snapdragons mostly, and a few Daturas. If not, I guess I'll move the dome onto the self-watering tray and leave a vent open for air circulation. .. And keep my fingers crossed!
Pam
Love Pam's set up. Very inspiring.
I'm trying to resurrect a wooden growing table that works well enough as furniture with growing stuff underneath. Something my dad made years ago out of maple and a glass top and my SIL eventually relinquished to me. With any luck I get to play with it while I'm recuperating from a day surgery next week.
Pam, your plants look wonderful! Good luck with them! Rosemary, hope all goes well for you....
here is my list so far
Agastache apricot sprite
Agastache raspberry daiquiri
Agastache Astello indigo
salvia coral nymph
salvia snow nymph
Pam yours look great! Nice set up.
Marilyn I'm sure I'll lose track of some of them!
Allison are you growing them under lights or WS them?
under lights.. but they can all be WS'ed.. I just like the flowers sooner
beautiful Pam!!
Do I sound like a broken record? wish I had room for racks and grow lights
Doing the paper towel method on some pea seeds to see if they are still viable..if not have to go buy some
Just put out some Agastache Cana Heather Queen seeds. Have other Agastache under lights. No more room under lights. Everything else will go to Winter Sow except for the very few precious Vigna Caracalla Vine seeds that will go in cups on the window sill.
I was supposed to some winter sowing but never got around to it, I need more seed starting soil
Have 30 gallons out and about the same amount to put out during the next week. Much easier than the ones under lights, although it's exciting to see the Magic Fountain Delphiniums, Pow Wow Berry Echinaceas, Salvia Patens Blue Angel, Agastache Apache Sunset, and the tiny Lisianthus already getting ready to go out as soon as the weather permits.
Jen it's not to late especially if you are doing annuals.
Teri, I'm still waiting on my Vigna to germinate it's been about 2 weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Did you soak and nick them? Last year only one of 5 seeds sprouted. They are uncommonly expensive!!
Yeah I did, had them last year too and nothing. Thought I'd try again...we'll see. If not I'll do them again next year...third times a charm!
it's def not too late Jen.. for annuals.. going to put some cosmos and zinnias out this week
That's what I'm doing next.
I don't start until April 1. That's our first weekend back at the house. I did most of the perennials this winter under lights, so it will be mostly annuals , herbs, lettuce, etc. Spring Sowing, not really winter sowing, but it still works for lots of stuff.
Hopefully the snow will be gone by then, Pam! Still have patches left here.....
I heard we got 13" last week. Here in NY it melted almost as soon as it came down.
I guess I'm still at the end of Winter Sowing and will continue with the Spring Sowing.
Just put out 2 jugs with Fragrant Sweet Peas (hope it's not too early) and started soaking 5 seeds for Japanese Morning Glory..Shredded Red Hige.
I have sprouts in some of my containers already! Asters and poppies...
Teri not to early for the sweets, I used to sow mine direct on St. Patty's day if we were thawed out. Are you WS your MGs?
