Anybody make a stuffed cabbage casserole? I've been looking up recipes, but they all call for instant rice, and I want to use regular rice.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Don't see why it would matter, it's cooked before you mix it in the meat.

Pork chops in the crock pot, baked taters, green beans and broccoli.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

STUFFED CABBAGE CASSEROLE
1 med. cabbage, cut up
1 lb. ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1/2 c. uncooked rice
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cans tomato soup
1 soup can water

Place cabbage in greased 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Brown beef and onion. Stir in rice and place mixture on the cabbage. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Combine soup and water and pour over all. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for an hour.

or another I found:
STUFFED CABBAGE CASSEROLE
1 lb. ground beef
3/4 c. rice
1 lg. onion chopped
2 cloves garlic
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. salt
1 28 oz. can tomato sauce
1/4 c. cider vinegar
2 tbs. brown sugar
1 tbs. dry mustard
8 c. coarsely chopped cabbage

Brown meat, onion, garlic. Drain well, add rice, salt, pepper. In small bowl mix together tomato sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, dry mustard. Layer 1/3 of cabbage in 3 qt. deep casserole. Arrange 1/2 beef mixture on top, cover with another 1/3 of cabbage. Top with remaining beef mixture and remaining cabbage. Pour tomato sauce mixture over the top, do not stir. Casserole will be quite full. Let it stand at room temperature for about 20 min.

Bake in 325°F oven for 2 hours without stirring.

CASSEROLE CABBAGE ROLLS
1 lb. ground chuck
1 chopped onion
1/4 tsp. salt
3 c. coarsely shredded cabbage
1/8 tsp. pepper
3 tbsp. raw long grain rice
1 (10 oz.) can tomato soup
1 soup can water

Brown ground chuck with onion. Drain. Add salt, pepper and rice. Add soup and water; mix well. Put cabbage into a greased baking dish. Pour meat mixture evenly over the raw cabbage. DO NOT STIR. Bake, covered, 1 1/2 hours at 325 degrees. Good reheated.

GROUND BEEF AND CABBAGE CASSEROLE
1 med. head cabbage, shredded
1 1/2 to 2 lbs. ground beef
1 c. chopped onion
6 tbsp. regular (not Minute) rice, uncooked
2 (10 3/4 oz.) cans tomato soup
2 soup cans water

Spread cabbage over bottom of greased large casserole dish. In skillet, brown beef and onion, adding salt and pepper to taste. Drain. Stir in rice. Stir in 1 can of soup and 1 soup can of water. Pour over cabbage; mix well.

In skillet, mix second can of soup with 1 soup can of water. Pour over cabbage- meat mixture; mix well. Cover and bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Serves 8 to 10.

No you don't cook the rice before adding it in the casserole, but you have to be careful that you have enough liquid in the there the entire time it's cooking or you'll end up with crunchy rice

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Wow Celeste, thank you. I didn't want to cook the rice first. Some recipes didn't cook the beef first either, but I will do that. I think I like the tomato soup for the sauce.

There are several pages worth of recipes @ cooks.com

Last night I made meatloaf in a bag (love the clean up), garlic mashed taters, fresh steamed swiss chard and for dessert I made fruit filled pastry's.
The cookbook showed them made with peaches but son doesn't care for peaches so I made them with apple and raspberries.
1) picture in the book
2 & 3) are ones I made

Ooh I might have to change from a Boston creme pie to a pastry
Nice job!
I don't like cleaning the mixer after making meatloaf, never thought of a bag.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh it's cooked in a bag, I thought it was mixed in a bag. Wondered how it would mix well enough, but still like the idea.

You add milk, egg and seasoned bread crumbs to the season packet they give you and mix with the hamburg. Shape into loaf with hands, place it in the bag and cook. You can add taters and veggies in the bag too if you want.

I always made my stuffed cabbage rolls with cooked rice and raw ground beef. That's the way my MIL made them, then covered them in tomato sauce.

Celeste I used the pot roast in a bag by McCormick last week and it was delicious! Will have to give the meatloaf one a try. Your pastries look scrumptious...recipe please!

Leftover meatball and rigatoni tonight, apple pie cooling for later.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Beef/veggie stew with baking powder biscuits on top.

+1 for shepherd's pie. The best I remember was served in a pub in Stratford, CA, after a late show at the Shakespeare festival.
