I live in Staten Island, New York. I keep getting different time zones on sites. From 6b to 7b. Which one am I??? Chuckle!! Thanks! :)

When you are a full member DG member page knows your Zone- but as recently as last year the USDA zones were updated for the first time in centuries, I will see if my iPhone will let me pull your general zone( there are all sorts of micro- macro climates where you are too

Well pooh! Not my day to be literate, you didn't add the 7b by your name on this post - DG did, 7b and 6a are simple merge points on the zones, means you can grow most any plants within those 2 zones. Sorry I am not more help

When you are talking plus or minus half a zone, your local situation matters a lot. For example I'm listed as a zone 5a where I am, but so is Camden, NY which is 15 miles north of me and has significantly harder winters. Even over a couple of miles there is a difference.

I'm sheltered to the west and to some extent north by woods. Oneida lake is about 2 miles west of me and we are in the middle of a swamp which means that it is slower to cool in late fall and slower to warm in the spring. I am effectively a 6a zone 3 miles away where it is dryer and more exposed it could easily be a zone 5a.

Here's another map--this would show you in zone 7. It doesn't go into a vs b, but since you're close to the boundary with zone 6 I'd expect it's probably 7a rather than 7b. But as others have pointed out there could be lots of microclimates in your general area which would make it hard to pin it down exactly regardless of whether you use a map like this or a zip code tool, etc. http://davesgarden.com/zone/show/PoppysueWorld Unless you already know that your immediate neighborhood tends to be slightly warmer/colder in winter than surrounding areas, sometimes the only way to really figure things out is to experiment with a few plants that would be borderline and see what works and what doesn't. I wouldn't experiment with anything expensive of course, but if you can pick up some bargain plants of questionable hardiness those could be good test cases.

Also just to clarify--if you want your zone to show up in your profile & posts, you need to put it in. DG doesn't know it automatically, you have to put it in when you edit your location in your preferences.
