Has anyone had any success starting peonies indoors? If so would you share your technic with me? I would like to try to get some started under lights this winter.
Thanks a bunch,

Peony Seeds
Theresa your best best would be to plant them now and leave them out over the winter. Most peony species take two years to germinate. Then it will be a couple of years before you see flowers. Find a spot outside to plant them & ingnore them - they might surprise you.
They need two stratification periods - after the first year out, they start roots. The plant doesn't start until after the second winter. I have some out in the coldframe going on their second winter and I'm not too excited that it will work, but I figure it's always worth a try!
That explains why peonies are so expensive. Could you maybe stratify them in the house? Freezer for awhile, then out in a warm spot for awhile then start over again? Might make the process a little quicker by maybe a year? Just a thought. I've never tried anything like that. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has though.
I was just about to pose the same question. A few months in the fridge or freezer, a few months out and the whole process again.... I guess it couldn't hurt to try but has anyone else had any sucess with it?
I'm trying just that with some trillium seds now - 3 months in the frige, three months out, three months back in and then it will be spring and I'll put them out in the garden. And wait. It sometimes taked 18 months to 3 years for trilliums. I don't think peonies are quite that hard, but I'm waiting on them, too. Good thing gardening engenders patience!!
