It is possible to test soil PH using Hydrangea?

I was intrigued by the striking plum flowers of a local Hydrangea and began my hunt to find the particular variety that creates such a beautiful flower. I stumbled across the interesting color changing nature of the Hydrangea as a result of PH manipulation. Based on this information could I rightfully conclude that it is possible to detect changes of garden PH or in the case of a cloned cutting that it would be possible to test PH at a different garden plot? Sure, it isn't difficult to test the PH in a garden, but the idea of having a constant gauge is pretty exciting.
