New to gardening; just bought a rosemary plant...what next?

It grows up, not out. The woman who sold it to me said I could keep it indoors during winter in a southern, sunlight-exposed window, but that it needed a new pot. I live in zone 7 and really want it to thrive in the winter. What do I need to do for transplanting it? Do I need to add more soil, and, if so, what kind? How do I treat the root ball? Do I break it up?
