I planted my garlic just before a mild frost we have had temps in the 60's with nights in the 40's - zone 5
Now I see my garlic is up about 3 inches......is that bad? Did I jump the gun and plant it too early?
Do I have to buy more garlic and begin again or is everything okay? Thanks for the help.
Garlic again !!!
They will be fine. Don't sweat it! Next year wait until around the end of October. As long as the ground is workable you're good! RELAX!
Here in WA my garlic gets frozen back 2-3 times every winter- but it comes back just great- I think the tops being nipped back may help the flavor- I grow some really tasting garlic. I put mine in ground 4 days ago, after heeling the cloves in for about 10 days. They already had grown about 2" of roots- they are rarin' to go!
What does heeling in the cloves mean?
Heeling in plants means just putting them in soil temporarily while they wait for a permanent home. I do it often when moving plants- they stay reasonably happy until you are ready to relocate them.
Thanks for reminding me about heeling in! I ordered some plants (not garlic) and they arrived b4 my planting area is done -- I'll go find an out of the way spot to heel them in.
My garlic sprouted early too, and I am a mountainous zone 5 so can get cold. If severe cold threatens, I keep a supply of leaves at the garlic bed and mulch it heavily. WE can get -20 degrees sometimes for a week or better, so anything below 15 above, I mulch.
