Acer in Pots Stop the freeze

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

I have two acer tress in pots they are about 18 inches tall I live in zone 7. I have them on the deck close to the house. Wondering how should I winter them over?? We are to have a freeze tonight. Thanks

the word Acer refers to many trees...are yours maple? If they are in pots (and preferably not watered recently) they should be fine up against your house. (Only in super cold conditions that would freeze their roots would I be concerned, since they are in pots.) (You could also just heel them in somewhere in your yard and they would be just fine.) By the way, is Maryland really in zone 7?

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes Iam in zone according to the University of Maryland agriculture dept (where I get my soil samples done) and sveral zone maps. I am on the lower side of the state. I am sure there are areas that are closer north that are in zone 6.

Yep Shoe, MD is a solid zone 7 :) As Happy said, some places in Northern and Western MD are a 6 but here near the bay, solid 7.

Hey Happy, we are neighbors, I'm over here in Pasadena! Nice to meet ya neighbor!

Good! Glad to hear the zone 7 info...now I know your acers have a better chance! (Plus I'm in zone 7 and love the growing season and weather that comes with it!) Happy growing HAPPY!

Hey Jody!! I always like to know there is some one close by who knows my suffering with no rain - dry heat - and wet springs!!
FYI to all I had a thing called a sub meter installed 5 years ago. (Never even knew what it was - got idea off a gardening web site). But any way ---- my county allows me to have a sub meter installed and then I am not charged a sewage fee for that amount of water. This can turn into big dolllars if you garden in dry spells and have a Mr. who has a bass boat that needs to be washed if the wind blows the wrong way LOL!!

LOL Happy, fotunately for me our boat is kept in Calvert County. We are still on a well here. Can you believe no rain this month, poor plants are crying and I'll be out today watering.

Yes, I feel your pain, lol, spring is sooooo wet, especially being right here on the bay, the yard looks like a pond for a month. Last year I had several plants rot. I've tried some raised beds but, as you said, it gets so dry in the summer that it is almost impossible, I have to water them just about daily. It is definately challenging to garden here.
