What is the difference between a New York and New England Aster?

Dr. Allen Armitage says that New England Asters have hairy stems than can cause a skin rash if touched but they have a much longer vase life than New York Asters. Most asters nowadays are hybrids of several different species so I usually don't get too caught up in the nomenclature.
