I have one of these which my mother gave me for my birthday, so I really don't want to give up on it, but the leaves have gone a bit yellow, and it has developed a smell rather like tom-cats! Does anybody else have this problem? any ideas whether it can be saved?
Calathea Mirosha (Shadowplant)
Does the pot have a drain hole?
If not, it needs one. It looks like it has been watered too much.
I agree, the yellowing leaves and the description of the bad smell makes me think it's been overwatered and the roots are rotting. In addition to getting some drainage holes in the pot if it doesn't have any currently, I would take it out of the pot, shake off as much of the old soil as you can, trim any slimy/rotting roots, and then repot in some fresh potting mix.
Thank you all very much for your advice. I will try it and let you know how I get on!
Don't think it was a drainage problem, the pot had drain holes and was not waterlogged. Tried changing the compost, roots all looked fine, no slimy bits or anything, and no unpleasant smell in the old compost. The smell seemed to be coming from the leaves, but was only noticeable after they started turning yellow. Have given up now and thrown the plant away, as the smell became quite overpowering!
