Hope I get some info here . I garden in several places: one is a patio in Back Bay Boston. because of the continual rehabing and consequent digging the rats are out of control. Have found the following suggestions for repellants to pour or spray on the holes
1. wasabi .... I have the powder. can anyone suggest what to mix it with and what proportions?
2. peppermint oil .. what to mix with and what proportions
3. extract of the hottest peppers available .. one suggestion was to extract the minced peppers with vodka (yes!) [ or rubbing alcohol]
anyone have any suggestions. I would love to hear of any success with these or any other methods. Quite serious : no joke here3

rat repellants
Shake-Away for rodents contains coyote urine. Used cat litter with a little added ammonia. Old rags doused with pure peppermint oil and stuffed down holes. Chlorine tabs (like those for swimming pools) dropped down holes and flushed with water. Pelletized lime mixed with cheap peanut butter. Wasabi powder or cayenne pepper mixed with Vaseline, melted, and poured down holes...mice/rats/chipmunks/squirrels/raccoons get it on their feet and lick it off. Unmelted and smeared on birdfeeder poles, it also works to deter unwanted critters. The pelletized lime will kill small animals that ingest it, so it should not be used if pets are in the area.
Wow! Thanks very much for the suggestions .Especially good to see that it might be worth spending the money fora commericial product .

You need to be careful what you put in the ground (down holes)-- you could be poisoning the soil. In Florida some of the water tables can be close to the surface, and you certainly don't want to contaminate them. I would never put chlorine tablets in the ground.
You're right. I wasn't thinking about the possibility of water contamination. Our water tables are usually considerably lower, but that's no excuse. Avoid the chlorine tabs and use one of the other, safer methods.
Update: used wasabi powder and peppermint oil spray - very successful
