I was given a Red Oak tree by my neighbor who knows of my plant obsession! The problem is we will only be in this house for another year or so, so I would like to take it with us. Could it be in a container til then? I am in zone 5 and it is about 18 in. tall right now.
Red Oak...
Yes most certainly, I would suggest going to a garden center as they can best help you with the right size container for it. Since I use to live in zone 5 I would suggest sinking it in the ground (while it is in the pot) and covering the base with a lot of leaves, or mulch to help over winter it.
You might also want to check out the container forum for a good continer mix for you tree, which will keep the roots healthy while in the container.

I concur with meadowyck, 100%. Just make sure the spot you put it in the ground is well drained. I've overwintered trees and shrubs in my compost pile.
yardener, thanks I forgot to mention that about a well drained spot.
