Medium size shade trees

I intend to plant 2 medium size shade trees in my front yard this fall. I want something that will not splinter such as Bradford Pear or Redbud. What are good solid reliable trees that will grow to be shade and beauty without completely dwarfing my house?

Quick-growing (although short-lived compared to oaks) maples are good for shade. Most trees do much better if planted in the spring, except dogwoods which like fall planting.

If you choose fall planting, do it soon so the roots have time to establish before frosts set in.
