I need to know when and how to prune. I was told that when it is pruned it will become more compact and have more blooms the following year.

pruning is best done during dormant months Dec to early Feb, the compact would depend on wanting it shorter, bushier, then you would trim back to where you wish the branches to begin doubling. Some bottle bushes don't take well to pruning, but I just know the one I have so can't say more
