dieffenbachia question

South Bend, IN

My friend asked about her new dieffenbachia plant. The soil is dry but drops of water keep falling off the leaves. What is the cause and what is the solution to this problem?

San Francisco, CA

There are quite a few plants that do this - many in the Aroid family - I can't tell you why they do it, but it is a very common phenomenon. On some species I've grown, they definitely drip more right after a watering, but do a little every morning even when dry. Others sp. it's intermittent or random.

I would replace the plant if the "behavior" is a problem.

It's called guttation, there's a ton of info out there to read.

My banana tree and canna's guttation and there's nothing to worry about. I just use a tissue and dry the water droplets. Do read up on it, it's interesting why some plants do & others dont.

..... as long as you're sure it's plant sap and not honeydew from scale or mealybug .....

The cause of 'guttation' and often related 'oedema' is usually a soil with high water content + conditions that suppress transpirational rates. For instance, guttation would be more likely or noticeable on cool, overcast, and humid days when the soil is extra moist.
