Do ants eat sweet potato leaves?

I found all these little tears in the leaves of my sweet potato vines and there are black ants crawling all over them. What should I do? Trying to keep from using chemicals.

That looks like hail damage to me. Have you had hail recently?

Actually, we did have a very brief storm come through just yesterday evening with a little bit of hail (smaller than pea-size) but it didn't even occur to me until you mentioned it. Thanks!
