What is this?

My first thought was dirt, but it wouldn't rinse off. What do you think it might be? By the way, I found it on the back of a Swiss Chard leaf. I have about eight pots of chard, but as I don't like to cook, my chard is only for display (I planted it for daily greens, but I soon found that harvesting and cooking is not for me).

in the mornings EARLY! you will probably see little green worms if you look close- then little moths if they grew up. Could also be roly polys, but they will strip leaf to veins with lace webbing look to the leaf afterward..

kittriana,

Sorry for the delay, but I didn't know that anyone had replied until just now when I came here to post another question. Anyway, you might be right, but I took some of the afflicted leaves to my local nurseryman, and he said that aphids, black aphids, were the problem. Until then, I hadn't known that they came in different colors.
