How far down to cut for cane borer damage?

I found a cane borer in a large (.5 inch diameter) cane of one of my roses. I cut down to the larvae (GROSS) and beyond, about eight inches below the larvae, but I still see a tiny bit of discoloration in the cross-section of the cane. This "dot" of discoloration (the size of the head of a pin) seems way too small for any insect larger than a mite, and certainly too small for the larvae I saw. But it's the same color brown... Is it possible that the borer just kept tunneling down the cane, and I need to keep cutting until the cane is completely clear of damage?

cut until you see a perfect cane and then dab some elmer's on the end.

by perfect, i mean when it looks completely healthy to you. it's been a while since i had to cut a cane for a borer and i don't remember if it was perfectly "white" or a bit of brown.
