With the high winds we've had today, my trellis that went from just under the eaves to the ground fell down. The Clematis that was on it looks OK, but I don't think I'll be able to get it back up easily with the vines on it. The Clematis is about 10 years old and very woody at the base, can I just trim it back, and let it start out again in the spring, or do I try to get the trellis back up with the Clematis on it?
HELP!! The Trellis Fell Down!!
Mine was blown down -luckily no vines on it yet. Im sure you can cut them back and they will grow again. Ive done it to my dark purple one when i cleaned out the dead stuff.
Momcat, if your ground isn't frozen solid yet, you might be able to lay over some of the branches, and start new plants. Dig a trench, loosen the soil, and pin the vines to maintain good contact with the soil. By late next spring, you should have roots wherever there's a node, and you can cut them into pieces and plant them elsewhere, or trade them :)
Thanks for the idea Vols, the ground isn't frozen, yet. Though there is a trace of snow in the air this afternoon.
