Help, what is wrong with my Phlox?

Eastern Nevada, United States

Hi,

This Bright Eyes Phlox is 3 years old now and up until this year has been beautiful! Now there is something wrong with my leaves and I'm not sure what it is. Could it be from a slight freeze that we had a few weeks ago or is it watering issues?

Thanks for the help.

Looks like damage from too much heat/sun. Mine get that if planted in full sun, so I moved them to a partially shaded location where they're sheltered from the peak afternoon sun.

Hummmm... The watering could be a factor, so feel the soil, is it way too dry or way too wet, or if it is just normal, and judge from there. However, I have seen many plants do strange things before out of the blue, and recover later. Please keep me updated, I would love to help you!

JasperDale, you are correct. Sun Damage!

I am uploading a photo of the phlox from last August for you too see the difference. I dont understand how it could be sun damaged when it has been in this very spot for 3 years now.....and it only is in the sun until around 1PM.

I will watch to see if the new leaves change any or if anything else happens.

@Dustin, I will check the soil and see what I can come up with. I appreciate the help from all of you!!

Weather might play a role--I don't know how your summer has been, but I've found that my plants (in general--I don't have any phlox) tend to get more fried looking if we have a bunch of relatively cool weather at the beginning of summer and then all of a sudden it jumps up into the 100's. The same plants have looked much better in other years where temps gradually work their way up to 100's with some 90's etc along the way, guess maybe that gives the plants more time to acclimate to heat/sun. Or maybe that gives new growth time to toughen up a bit before being exposed to high heat?

Wow, nice pic there SandyLJ! You should post that pic on the PlantFiles Pictures if you know what type of phlox that is! You phlox where boomin last year! Take in consideration what ecrane3 said. How did the soil turn out to be?

Happy Independance Day and Gardening!

Thank you ecrane and that does make sense...we had a strange spring with cool temps going to the mid to upper 70's, up to the 90's and then back down to below 30 a few nights. I am guessing that could be part of the problem, not to mention the horrible winds that we had for 21 days straight! Do you think I should just leave the damaged leaves on them or should I cut them off or prune my plant back?

Why thanks Dustin....it is the Bright Eyes Phlox and I will take up that recommendation. The soil is pretty moist as I have it under about 2" of bark....also, the new leaves are starting to brown on the tips....I truly am thinking that they got to much moisture?

Hope your 4th was great as well!!

Your phlox looks like my phlox, which I just smelled for the first time today. Heavenly! No wonder it is such a popular old standby, if new to me. Mine grows in a pot :( -----no choice about that, but in dappled shade. Can't imagine it liking too much direct sun and super high heat...
