Your Neck of the Woods Chat Summer 2012 Part 1

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

David - I'll take my book with me if I have to head to Front Royal this weekend. I picked some up from Pet Smart before I saw your post...LOL. I'll simply rtn it if I find some wild growing. I certainly have no desire to plant this in the ground as a welcome 'mat' to all the felines roaming the neighborhood - rather keep it as a potted plant on my deck.

Sally - Sept's fairly free for me. Oct gets a bit complicated...as the others said though...do not plan around me - do what works best for you.

Let's pick a date!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I got some weeding done this morning thanks to a little bit of rain. Made conditions just perfect for weeding. Ric came home with a few bargin plants so I might get those in the ground and hope to move a few rocks to the new water feature.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

we only received .04" of rain, but it cooled off considerably high was only 76° so I got in some weeding too....lots more to do though

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

It is pretty overcast here and they are call for Thunder Showers later. I think I will try to go out and move a little more stone, new water feature is almost finished. The lower level is done. We also have been tiling the Bird Bath Pond and it is looking really nice.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Poured down for two solid hours last night. came down in buckets, inch and a quarter by early counts! First one inch rainfall since May,and only the third time it has rained since then. Maybe it is moving some of your way.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Can only hope and pray we get some serious rain today

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

So far we haven't dark clouds keep passing us by. A few large drops and then it is gone, not enough to even get the street wet.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

thundering in the distance

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Blessed rain today...a good soaking...everything looking very refreshed and 'happy'

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Lucky YOU! We had none here.....a few drops--and off it went towards VA.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

We had a good drenching last night, but everything was so dry that today's heat is making the ground dry and hard again.

Gita, I put emptied tea bags around the dead Blushing Susie blooms to catch the seeds. They are difficult to catch any other way since they just "poof" when they're ready.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses--please explain closer....

How do you put empty tea bags around a bloom???? Like-rip them open and then tie them on?
I do not drink tea--but would sacrifice the bags to collect seeds.

Can the bloom be picked off and put in a container to dry--and then collect the seed?
Can one tell when the bloom is getting "done" and ripe for seed picking?

Then--Do you just plant the seeds in the spring--like anything else?

I have to Google Blushing Suzie and see what the blooms look like....I have NO blooms yet...

Thanks, Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

My Blushing Susie is doing very well. So is the Brug you gave me Gita but no blooms on it yet.

Mine is just climbing---no sign of flowers yet....

Holly--How do YOU collect seeds from this plant?

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I haven't tried saving seeds from it Gita. I'm not much of a seed collector.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Tea bags, eh? What a great idea! I'd always heard panty hose - sounds like both would work

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Wonder if you could make small bags from coffee filters.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly--

Did you just plant your B.S. this year? It is so far along! I see you have it in the ground.
Is it a perennial??? Mine is growing in a big pot. Climbing very well--just no blooms yet.

I have my blooming Epi hanging high above it from the Patio Roof edge. It gets a bit of shade there.
If the vine starts vining around the Epi fronds (I know it will!), I will have to move it again.
This pot must weigh 25lbs--and is hanging extremely off-center. NOT an easy job!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Gita,I tie the emptied tea bag around the bloom that's fading and I take it off when I see the seed in there. You can't take the seeds before this time (I am told).

The flowers look like this:

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

They came from RRR she has blessed me with them these last few years. So it was just a little thing when she gave it to me in May. No it's not perennial in our zone.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

so hot out there the clothes on the line dried in 1/2 hour

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

WOW! Holly!
WHAT do you have in YOUR soil that I do not???? I got mine at the Swap as well.
Yours is so far ahead of mine! Do not worry! When mine blooms--i will show you all.

Roses--
are you talking about the tea bags that we put in hot water--with the string attached--and then remove?
The spent tea is still in the bag--so how do you get a clean, used tea bag to put around a small bloom?

Sorry to be such a pain! This IS how I learn enough about anything--so I can pass it on. Endless questions.....

Thanks--Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Those beds by the gazebo were filled in with compost and mushroom soil when we put them in a few years ago.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Starbucks has this recycle program for coffee grounds. You call them up and tell them when you want to go pick the grounds up. I got some last weekend.

Make sure you use coffee grounds correctly, especially when using in large quantities. Here is one article that does not recommend using raw grounds in the garden http://www.gardensalive.com/article.asp?ai=793. I have seen many other articles that said grounds could be used raw.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

So much of what's good or not good depends on the relative amount. As you said, in large quantities, might be aware of possible acidity issue, and they way they sort of crust over.. But most homeowners have such a small amount I can't think they have to worry.
My DS brings home about a gallon at a time and I mix it lightly (say 1/4 inch?) into the soil, anywhere. I put it in the can't hurt might help category. The nitrogen content and the acidity can be way overblown either good or bad IMHO. Some people hear "has nitrogen" and think a cup of coffee grounds is the same as a cup of lawn fertilizer.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It is 101° out there right now!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We just had a big T-strom blow thru.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

We were promised a T-Storm tonight....Sure has looked like it most of the day.

The skies have been "ominous" now for about 2-3 hours....I keep waiting to see WHEN it will happen????

It seems dark--then it brightens up. As I write this (6:30PM) I hear rumbling....yeah..yeah....
Praying for actual rain to come.....But--we have been "fooled" the last few times...

Driving home from shopping about 3 hr.s ago--exactly TWO drops of rain fell on my windshield...

Geez! Give us a break--rain gods!!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It poured here some nasty wind gusts and thunder but only registered .07" of rain..... hmmmmm

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I kept waiting...then finally - gave up...got the hose and watered. My one collection of basil was pitiful looking - the other pot (same size) 3 feet away looked fine...sheesh!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

We had a major storm tonight -- lots of rain.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

We never got anything either!
OH--it gor cloudy and dark---all the signs of a coming storm. Then it cleared up---then it got
cloudy again-etc...etc....In the end---there was NO rain at all.

This is about the third T-Storm forecast for this area--and nothing came of it.
What gives?????
We need rain so badly!!!! Water restrictions are breathing down our throats! Not here yet--gladly!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

We actually lost power for 3 hours, in addition to getting a lot of rain. And it is supposed to rain tomorrow afternoon and Friday as well -- thank God. I am so tired of watering!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

SALE ALERT - Confederate Jasmine and Carolina marked down to 3.99 and 3.50 at Lowes

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Crazy storm last night rearranged all the deck furniture and blew out the screens in the deck room.

Gita, I use emptied dry tea bags and use the string to fasten it to the spent bloom.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We had a big strom with lots of rain last night. So glad we won't have to break out the soaker hoses to water the big bushes. Going out to take advantage of the damp ground and do some weeding. My hardy Hib is blooming.

It's actually cool today. We worked outside this morning pruning bushes and trees, weeding and transplanting stuff. After some afternoon shopping at The Crossings, we stopped for home made ice cream at Kelly's and I was comfortable sitting in the car mid afternoon with the windows open. It felt soooo good. We have a few more days before the heat comes back.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

It is really rumbling outside. I sure hope that means we MAY get some rain!!!!
Mother Nature keeps messing with us.....

Keeping my fingers crossed........

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Met my family that was in from FL, SC and AZ at my cousins beach house...it was actually chilly at the beach but water was super warm
