Bird of Paradise Plant doesn't bloom

Severance, KS

I have had a Bird of Paradise plant for several years. It seems to be doing well as far as developing new leaves, etc., but it never blooms. I keep it indoors in the cold weather by a west window and outside in a part sun/part shade location in the summer. Is there something special I should be doing to encourage blooming? Thanks.

There are a few things called bird of paradise and it would help to know which one you have--there are a few in genus Strelitzia that go by that name http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=strelitzia&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search and also some from genus Caesalpinia http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=bird+of+paradise&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=caesalpinia&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

I suspect that you have one of the Strelitzia species--if that's the case they often need to get to a decent size before they'll bloom so you probably just need to give them time, maybe a little more sun as well when they're outside but mostly just more time. If it's one of the Caesalpinia species then probably more sun during the warmer months would help.

My plant looks like it's from the genus Strelitzia. I will give it more time and try to give it some more sun when it's outside, too. Thanks for your help.

completely agree, you just need to give it time, the plants need to be substantial before they flower. But when they do it is soooooo exciting!
