Summer flowers

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I could move thew whole pot and trellis to a sunnier location.
Which would be an East full sun exposure until 2PMN-3PM.
Would that work? My mandevilla LOVES this light--and grows huge every year.

Love the flowers ,#4 zinnia looks like a double Gailardia.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yes, should do good with same sun as the mandevilla

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Sally - THAT is excellent!!! I've never had mine bloom this early....wowzers!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I think that heat is doing 'good' for cetain things, like maybe this, and maybe those Elephant Ears of haighr's. And my own black EE has a big new leaf..

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Alright MAG;

I apologize if this is the wrong thread for the post but I figure I could stretch it! If not you can DM me to keep the post clean.

Anybody have experience growing blanket flowers from seed? I have some seedlings that I need to move on to the next step, they are overcrowding themselves.

Should I separate them now? Put them directly in the ground? Pot them individually?

Have you had them outside this whole time? In sun? If not they have to slowly be acclumated to the sun
They def are too crowded, need to be separated. Usually put them in ground when about 4" tall or so

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Glad someone asked that....I'd hate to share what my eyeball plants look like in the milk jug....ugh...will plant out tomorrow...

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes. They have been outside in sun the entire time. Midday sun, 4 hours.

Lol chantell.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Then they can go right in the ground

Quote from flowAjen :

Yeah...but if its going to be in full sun I'd give them shade for a few days , in this blasted heat.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

So your all still baking this summer "way back east"? Rainy and a cool muggy here(lol)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The humidity has now kicked in, high 80's here

local garden center has their annuals 50% off, I needed to fill some empty deck pots I hadn't gotten around to filling earlier

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

More like prairie coneflower, sawtooth or narrow leaved maybe?Anyway another catagory to have a look at lol.

It always confuses me as so much like BES they do look.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

They had no detailed tags on anything so I have no clue which hibiscus it is, sorry

I rescued a cleome from a crack in the concrete at our church(that's not considering stealing is it???) I put it in some seed starter mix in a cup and so far so good ☺

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Could the HIBISCUS be Satsuma orTangerine? I am really not good with web color,The more yellow pic like Tangerine the more orange like Satsuma either way and regardless that is a very pretty flower.!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jen--

Mine were also coming up in all the sidewalk/edging cracks after I had THREE MG's growing in 2009.
Same as all the 4-O'clocks . They all ARE in the same family of plants---right?
I grew Grandpa Ott MG's about 4 years ago. maybe more...It climber to my 2nd story windows.
They are STILL coming up--twining all over my Rose and my Clematis in that area.

The 4's look just like MG as seedlings. Hard to tell them apart--until they grow their true leaves--
The 4's leaves are pointed. The MG ones are heart-shaped. Then you can tell which is which.

I miss having a 4'Oclock this season---but I just do not have room for a 3x3 foot "shrub".

Awwwww....I need a bigger garden!!! Gita

So funny how different areas grow flowers differently, I tried mgs here and they never took off

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I remember a house I used to live in in So. Cal., my Mom used to grow 4 O'clocks in a bed all along the front porch, man they were beautiful!! I used to think they were called 5 O'clocks though.. there isn't any such thing, right? Anyway, we sell the seeds at work, been thinking about growing them again... I could make room! =)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

speedie--

I have over a cup of seeds from the 4's "Broken Colors".
Be glad to share with anyone who wants some....

Aaaw, that is very generous of you, yes please, if you don't mind sparing a few, I will nurture them and love them, and share more seeds when they produce! Thank you Gita! =)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

You got it!
And--you will have 100's of seeds from just one plant--IF you are vigilant about picking them.

AND--beings they are not really hardy in out area--you can dig up the root and keep it dormant for the winter.
Then, in mid-spring--throw some dirt on it, water it a little--and patiently wait to see new green growth.
Then re-pot it in your garden--and stand back!!!!

Gita

1--Close-up of flowers. They are never the same.....
2--a one-year old root system dug up. The stems will wither and drop off over the winter.
3--Close-up of a seed. If you don't get them--they will roll off and fall to the ground.

We just started having a serious T-Shower downpour.

Looks like it will stay around a while.....The sky is dark and it looks like Doomsday!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita, I was very pleased when I got home today to see the bloom on one of the Brazilian Plume flowers you gave me. I was thinking I was going to miss the bloom and there is another one coming on another plant as well.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, YES!!! I remember those seeds on Mom's flowers!! Wow, yours are so gorgeous, I just LOVE the combo of colours on each bloom!! God bless you, you've made another yardener very happy!! =D

We got some major storminess last night too, lots of thunder rumblings and rain.. will check the gauge in a little bit to see how much we got. Was just happy that neither the power nor the cable (internet) went out like it usually does. ;) I hope you got a long gentle deluge!! (oxymoron? LOL!!)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly--

Happy that your Br. Pl.'s also bloomed! Seems they all are on somewhat the same schedule.

Speedie---
Will throw in seeds from another 4'Oclock I have grown. Don't have much! Hope I have a few....

It is called "Limelight"---as in Lime color leaves. The blooms are bright magenta.
This one grows quite small---no bigger that an average, healthy Mum.
It does not bloom all that prolifically--but the leaf color is very complimentary to other flowers.

My small Brug is blooming, scenting a quarter of the yard and reminding me why I put up with the winter storage needs it has..ahhh!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally---
All my Brugs, by now have survived the horrible Spider Mite attacks.
The chewed up leaves have all yellowed out and dropped off--or I have pulled them off.

All three of my Brugs are in bud. The stems are a bit bare--but the plants are thriving.
--"Maya" is the first to bloom.
--Dr. Seuss is in serious bud--with a few blooms opening.
--The pink NOID is the barest (of leaves)--but it also has a bunch of buds....

And---things march on.....survival rules!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, those magenta blooms against the lime leaves are absolutely gorgeous!! If you can spare 2-3 seeds it would suuuure be appreciated, but if you can't, then please don't worry, and thank you so much for the thoughtful thought. :)

Sally & Gita, any way you could share a pic and some of the aroma of your brugs in here? =)

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I second that thought speedie!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Later- I can post pics from last year when it grew much bigger. I had one by the front door and it 'flushed' with bloom 4 times..ahhh! This year is much smaller. It must have suffered from lack of water earlier.

Love Jen's Hib and Sally's Nicotiana. Two of my favorites.

Kopper King Hib, Hopi Crape Myrtle, Limelight Hydrangea, Cardinal Climber, Hot Papaya Echinaces. (Not in that order, but you know them)
