I have an indoor zz plant that has really thrived and grown quite large. My problem is the stems are so strong that the stakes I have supporting them are not working. Many of the stems lay to the outside of the pot and not very upright. Any ideas how I can support the stems so the plant is upright and not using so much floor space? I'd appeciate any help as I really like this plant and don't want to get rid of it. Thanks

Prune it.

I have two large ZZ plants that do that every winter when I have to bring them inside. In the garden center at Wal Mart I found a package of green bamboo stakes that were inexpensive. They were too long so I cut them to the length I needed making sure I had enough length to drive it all the way to the bottom of the pot and have enough above to come almost to the top of the plant. I positioned it as close to the middle of the plant as I could but in a spot where I was driving into soil, not the plant. I'm sure it damaged some roots but the plants never showed any signs of stress. I then used green florist's tie (found in most hobby shops) in discrete places where it didn't show and tied the wayward stems. In the spring when I'm able to put them back on the porch, I remove only the florist's tie (leave the stake in for next winter) and prune off the stems that fall outside the pot. In the summertime humidity, the plants quickly put on lots of new stems which grow straight and tall.
