Plant tags and plant ID markers

I'd like to find some plant markers that are not plastic. I need to label the separate cultivars of daylilies and irises and so forth. I found some on eBay but I would first like to see what has been tried and proven. What kind of plant markers can you recommend ? I will need at least 50.

People use old aluminum venetian blind slats, cut to size, for this. They can be written on with a lead pencil, and apparently, it is long-lasting. (I haven't used these myself.)

Some people use slate and drill a small hole in the slate to allow for ties to hold the slate onto a cane.
Others use Lolly-pop sticks, (wood) a Laundy marker pen is used to prevent the rain washing off the writing.
Juice cans cut into stips, write on the inside of the can as this has no design on it.
I feel sure there will be others who can give more ideas than here.

Whatever you use, if you cover the writing with clear fingernail polish, it seems to last longer. Try to face the writing away from direct sun. I like the metal mini-blinds, too. You can cut them to the size you want. Once you get everything planted, it might help to take some pics and "write on the pics" on your computer using "paint" program in accessories folder in case your markers get moved, blown, etc... you can look at the pics.
