I'm reclaiming an abandoned garden -- abandoned by me 6 years ago. After clearing out the trash and volunteer trees, I found a huge patch of oregano (4'x8') next to another huge patch of coneflowers (6'x10') all of which came from 2 plants each -- yeah.
They spread and survived on their own -- but the coneflowers are not blooming well even after general fertilizer this spring.
Any thoughts on the two competing with one another?
I don't see how they could be competing with each other if they have multiplied that much. Not enough sun or water?
Thanks, Astrablue, I wondered about that... the PLANT is healthy, but the flowering part is restricted...
How much sun does the area get? If it's not enough that could limit blooming. Also I don't think coneflowers need a lot of fertilizer, and too much fertilizer can stimulate green growth at the expense of blooms.
I think echinacea like to be ignored.
I agree about the fertilizer, I never give mine any.
Sun or spacing could be the answer. Do echinacae need to be separated as some other perennials do? I've never grown them enough to know about this.
