My mother-in-law asked me to fix her dying Peace Lily a few weeks ago. It was a plant that she got from a funeral of someone dear to her and she is in a panic thinking it may die as well.
When I took it from her house it had yellow tips and some very dried out dead leaves. The leaves had faded to light green and it was looking quite limp and just plain shabby. What you see in the picture is after I have had it for several weeks. As you can see it is looking somewhat better than my description at the time of receipt.
I cut off all the dead foliage, pulled it to access the underside situation. I did not find any dead or mushy roots so I put it in another pot (not much bigger at all) and added some more, new potting soil to the top as I was afraid to disturb the root ball any more than I had to because I knew that the changes I would HAVE to make might shock it enough. I placed it in a window that is covered with a sheer curtain as you can see and it seems to be doing much better. The leaves are now (mostly) standing up and it is sending up new shoots. The leaves that were already on it are becoming darker green in color, but not the color of the full happy ones that belong to me.
I have been watering it only when the top inch of soil is dry and that is coming to about every week or week and a half. I take it out to the patio and water it thoroughly until the water drains out the bottom and then I bring it right back to its filtered sunlight spot.
I have not given it any fertilizer.. Should I wait until it is even healthier before doing so? If so, how long should I wait, and how much should I give when/if I do? Is there anything else I should be doing to help it continue on to it's full recovery? I'm hoping the leaves will get darker green as it gets healthier... Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. She is counting on me and I hope to not let her down.
Peace Lily Advice
That plant looks great! PL's can have tough recoveries from bad conditions, inconsistent care.
Did the new soil have any fertilizer crystals or balls in it? Would want to know that before proceeding with an additional fertilizer.
Older leaves are unlikely to recover their health but are being replaced with beautiful new leaves, so the older leaves can be removed at your discretion. I never leave ugly leaves on a plant, totally defeats the purpose of having it, although I don't see any leaves in your picture I would remove. PL's thrive on consistency, of moisture, light, temperature, sounds like you're doing exactly that.
Maybe your MIL will let you tend it long enough to feel comfortable about letting you divide it? Then each of you have a back-up at the other's house.
Thank you for saying it looks great Opp. That really makes me proud. I sure hope to get it back to excellence for her.. I put a Parlor Palm MY Mom once had, and almost killed, in my ICU care a couple years ago. I had it back to super healthy and I gave it back to her and she killed it -again.. Made me sad but what can you do?
I'm trying to teach my mother-in- law how to care for the few houseplants she has. This one PL was just pitiful. I have actually already removed all the leaves that I felt needed to me removed. You can see at the base of the plant there are alot of stalks from which I cut "alot" of leaves..
My husbands grandfather passed away a few weeks ago and of course we brought home even more PL's... I tend to keep mine healthy (I only borught home one of those) and I already have several but my MIL kept the BIG one (probably 4 1/2 foot tall) The deal we have is if it starts looking bad at all, I get to bring it home and keep it. -- She was going to let me have it to begin with, but my FIL walked into our conversation and said No, the person that gave it to us specifically asked that we keep it... To myself I thought, "I wonder if that person really WANTS it to die/"....I know, Mean of me, but its true.. So we shall see....
Opp, I forgot to answer your question earlier.
When I added the soil I only added it to the top in just a thin layer and a very small amount tucked into the sides just to make sure there were no air pockets. It is a little Miracle Grow with some perlite and bark mixed in. With that said, it may be getting all the food it needs from the little bit of MG. I felt/feel pretty sure that in the condition it was in when I got it, it did not need any additonal fertilizer to it. My thoughts are it can't be getting much with no more MG than I put in the pot, but maybe it is just enough.
Open to suggestions,
GTS
