June Blooms

Arlington, TX

June is here and with the last rain things are blooming like crazy. I thought I would start with a cactus. Just bought and a TX native. Hematocactus hematecanthus

Very pretty yellow blooms!

That is adorable Cheryl.

Unfortunately its H. Setsipnus. Which is still native but less Hardy. Guess I need to resist a "bargain". Still its a nice plant.

American Germander has taken over this bed, but that's okay...it's contained!

Cucumber blooms are plentiful this time of the year.

Daylilies (& my neighbor's little boy kitty) along the driveway.

I absolutely LOVE rock rose! The flowers are so bright and pretty and the plant is a native that does well in full sun or partial sun.

This little butterfly (a gray hairstreak maybe?) was making the rounds and trying to avoid a wasp that was flying around.

West Texas blue mistflower is really putting on a show!

Looking beautiful Stephanie!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes very nice Stephanie, and I also see that you have Western Ironweed about to bloom.

Even though we are suffering from no rain and extremely high temps, parts of my yard are going strong.

Josephine, yes, my western ironweed is about to bloom. I didn't realize they bloomed so early in the season. This is only the 1st full year I've had them. Last year, mine didn't bloom until fall.

Joy, love all your flowers!! Those sunflowers are gorgeous! Do you know what variety they are?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Stephanie,

I love sunflowers and this year devoted two 30' rows to them. Mammoth, of course, with its huge heads and massive 6' stalks; Autumn Beauty, a short but gorgeous flower; Tiger Eye on left, tall and Fantasia on the right. I also have several lemon colored varieties that I missed getting pictures of, they are a little harder to get used to, a paler butter colored petal that looks fresh and cool instead of warm and sunny.
I hope to get some of the frilly and teddy bear ones for next year, although I prefer to be able to save the seed and those two are hybrids.
I lost all my daylilies to the drought last year, I love your blooms.

Well I finally took some photos yesterday of a few things. This first one I can't believe. My Saucer Magnolia is blooming and it is full of foliage!! Usually it blooms before the leaves appear.

Cannas and ironweed...to the right is a small wahoo tree, doing well this year.

The last is not blooms but still excited me to see. Two Giant Swallowtails, the female trying her best to ignore the young male while she deposits eggs on my Hercules Club. Yesterday was my first siteing of the GSTs that were so prolific in years past.

Herman, my DH, is doing the container thing again this year to keep himself busy and help ignore his pain. Everytime we leave the house he picks up plants though!
One that I especially love is this varigated purslane. It just makes me smile.

Beautiful Sheila! So good to see Herman out & about puttering with his container garden!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Stephanie! Yes it is good to have the help too. He walks around the yard and dead heads stuff in the mornings. He calls the cannas "his" LOL! He is back for another hernia surgery in a couple weeks, then maybe be able to get the implant for his back pain. Two back surgeries in Sept, two hernias in Dec......I think it is time he had a break!! I think the mowing and heavy yardwork is all mine now for good.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Really nice Sheila, your Hercule's club tree looks to be good size, how old is it?
I really hope that Herman will come out of it well this time, bless his heart, he has been through a lot, and so have you.

Had to look back at the pics and see that the first one I have was April 2010 and it was about a foot tall. Can't remember who I got it from, but it was from a DG swap I am positive.

My wisteria by the front gate is really putting on a show, the blooms are so dark they look like shadows. Had a flock of sulphurs the green ones are huge, seem to be yellow angled sulphurs, the little one an orange sulphur. My heirloom marigolds are going nuts, they are so pretty and tall.

Those are gorgeous Joy, is your wisteria the evergreen kind?
The sulphurs are really big and beautiful , we hardly ever get those around here.

Red Oak, TX

Flame Acanthus along my driveway has burst into bloom this week. One of my favorite plants. Joy, your butterflies are Cloudless Sulphurs (the big ones) and the little guy is called a Little Yellow.

Thanks Dale, I poured over my books trying to get the big green ones, I looked at the Cloudless and mine seemed to be much bigger (and greener). It is so hard for a neophyte to get them right. The little one really hung with the "flock" it was hard to get a good look at him. Thanks again! Is there a yellow tiger striped butterfly other than a swallowtail? We had two for a couple days that had no swallowtail on either.

Yes the wisteria is the evergreen kind, I wasn't sure I would like it originally but it is a very tame climber and no problem at all.

BTW, those flame acanthus are beautiful.

Arlington, TX

I have never seen the green butterfly, it certainly is beautiful.
Random pics.

Beautiful sea of blooms Dale! With full sun they are loving it there.

Nice shots of your beautiful garden Cheryl. Couldn't help but laugh on the last one....the pond seemed pretty good size until I caught a glimpse of the HUGE black dog! LOL!

Lovely pictures Sheila.
Dale I love the Flame acanthus too.

Sheila, since your fall aster is already blooming, does this mean fall is on the way sooner than we expected?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Goodness I hope not!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I could sure use a break from these warm temps and humidity. ;)

These daylilies were so pretty in the evening sun last night.

Always love to see the four o'clocks.

Katie's Pink ruellia is really starting to bloom nicely with the warmer temps.

My Raspeberry Wine monarda (from Sheila) has burst forth in blooms! I so love their color.

Don't you think the blooms look like jester hats?

Still loving the Kwanzos. This is one of their better years. Must be all the rain we've received lately. :)

The Jacob Cline monarda I received from Michael at this spring's RU has bloomed, too! So excited!
