Verbena Not Blooming

Clovis, NM(Zone 6a)

I purchased a six pack of annual verbena about 3 weeks ago. They had really nice bright red blooms when I bought them and the first week they were in the ground. I have been watering them twice a day the first week to get them established and also because it has been hot here the past few weeks. I have them in a spot that gets the brunt of the afternoon sun. Am I overwatering them or is it just too dang hot?

Did you remove the spent flowers? Verbena needs deadheading regularly to keep it blooming. I also think it has enough water. Verbena's claim to fame is that it is exceptionally heat tolerant, so don't worry about that. It likes 8-10 hours of sun a day and requires very well drained soil. Check out this general info link from Aggie Hort/tamu.

Plants will often stop blooming when you transplant them--they need time to get their roots going again before they'll spend more energy on blooming. Having very hot weather while they're trying to get their roots going will make that process a little more stressful for them, but as long as the plants still look healthy they should come back and bloom later on (definitely deadhead them too--but even if you did that, the plants could still stop blooming while they adjust to their new place)
