Parsley plant is growing out of control! What is the best way to harvest this plant? Should I cut at a certain point above the soil or this a one time and done type of plant? Basically I want to use the parsley and want it to regrow if possible. From what I've read on the web I should just cut what I need 1 inch above the soil...is this correct? How many times can I cut before it stops regrowing? Any more info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Harvesting Parsley
I just chopped off a bunch of parsley a inch above the soil. I guess we will find out if it regrows or not.
1" above the soil sounds reasonable to have it continue growing. I wouldn't cut the Whole thing, just sections, perhaps, to give it time to recover ?

Oooops? We have parsley clump, I treat it like other herbs and just thin and chop a bit off to keep it in shape, does that help?
Gymgirl - I chopped off just what I needed for my lasagna and garlic bread and left the rest. The chopped part hasn't started growing back yet but its only been a few days.
Kittriana - What exactly do you mean by thinning? I thin my basil plant but parsley seems like a very hard plant to thin. I just cut off a section 1 inch from bottom. I'm assuming it will regrow.
We don't use a lot, so instead of chopping off a chunk, we just pull a few from different places in the clump- that better? Chuckl- I must of been distracted that day.

I cut some twigs of my parsley about 2 weeks ago and it shows regrowth now. But it's the thicker, curly type of parsley and not the flat leafed one
Springfever - My parsley also is showing signs of regrowth. I cut a good bunch about 1 inch from the soil and it is almost back to wait it was before the cutting.
I never had luck growing parsley in pots, so this year, I transplanted them directly to the garden. They are doing very well and I just pick off leaves from the outside as needed.
A vole ate a few of the plants, but then gave up. I'm hoping our resident black snake crawled out from under the house and ate it!

We grow ours in earth boxes with a fence around it as the wild life seems eat it if they can get at it.
If you still have extra it can be cut and dried for use this winter.
Parsley is a biannual which means it grows for two years and flowers the second year. It is hardy here in zone 5 so we let it winter over outside. I over seed the current plants so that we have a continued crop of parsley.
