Help!! I need advice

Austell, GA(Zone 7a)

I'm counting on you green thumbs for help here. I have a gorgeous, huge new guinea impatien. Should I dig it up and bring it in? Any special tips for wintering it or is it worth it? It is still blooming its heart out as it did all summer, never once wilted although most everything else did at some point. Also, do these babies make seeds. I haven't found any. It is supposed to get rather chilly this weekend. Thanks, Brenda

Impatiens don't like cold. I would recommend that you bring it in, and/or - if you're game - take cuttings and try rooting them. That way you can get even more plants next year. Watch for pests - aphids, whiteflies, etc. when you bring in a plant that's been outdoors all season.

I have never found seed either, but I had one in a pot outdoors last year, brought it in for the winter, put it back out this spring, and low and behold there was a pot nearby that has been full of impatiens all year. I felt like it must be seed from last year dropped in that pot. If it was a broken piece that rooted, it was out there all winter (zone 8, never thought impatiens would survive winter here either).

Mine make it through the winter if they are protected from the frost. They look half dead but come back up. Just DON'T cut it back. I would bring it into the garage or someplace protected from extreme cold . They are very hardy impatiens but then I can even revive regular impatiens here /zone 9. Much luck. I also agree about taking cuttings just in case. Shirley
