N Michigan (zone 5/6)....type to plant seeds, divide, etc.

Howard City, MI(Zone 5b)

I Live in northern Michigan (zone 5/6). I have two questions:

1) What is the absolute best month to start planting seeds and bulbs?.......so that we can still enjoy them this year.

2) When is it safe to divide plants that have gotten too big? Want to make sure I don't do it too late so I kill them and have to wait until next year to enjoy.

Please Help! Thank you gardeners!!! :)

It will depend on what you are planting. Gladiolus you can now. Daffodils, Tulips, etc are done for the year.

For seeds, many of us in up state NY which is the same zone as MI are planting our gardens now.

In your location this year you have a wide window. You could have been planting for the last few weeks. But I would say that the sooner the better. You can still plant your veggies and especially if you buy some plants from the Greenhouse that are already started like your tomatoes, peppers, etc.

Annual flower seeds are planted right now if you have not already planted them.

As far a bulbs they are usually planted in the fall for spring flowering. But you can plant Glad Corms and other summer flowering plants right now. Day lilies, Iris etc can be planted now..[the only thing is that Day Lilies and Iris are already in bloom if you plant now yours may not bloom until next summer] . The things like glads will still bloom and you could plant Dahlia tubers and they should have enough time to bloom. You have a longer growing season in your location and if you start right away you can plant a whole range of flowers.

I would suggest that you visit some of the great greenhouses in your area, Especially in the Grand Rapids area if you want to drive that far. Mt. Pleasant also has some that can make suggestions as to what you can still plant.

We just planted veggies like beets, Swiss chard, onions and pole beans and we will have plenty of time for them to mature and produce a crop. Our location is a little north and across the state from you and we are still planting.

Have a good season!

For seeds, it usually tells you right on the packet what temp to wait for
Farmer's almanac has great charts for seed/plant starting
