Tag says it is "Herbaceous Perennial". I assumed that Southern California Coastal climate would allow it to acclimate and keep its follage all year. Actually, I didn't understand what herbaceous perennial meant. I planted, they grew and bloomed their first season in the ground. Boom, the calendar said it was winter and they dwindled back to nothing even though skies were blue, sunny and warm. Discouraged, I dug up all but one plant. It has now come back. Bigger than last year, blooming, gorgeous!
Can this variety eventually acclimate to being evergreen in this Southern California Coastal climate?
AGAPANTHUS "MIDNIGHT BLUE" VARIETY - HELP ME!!!
There are a couple different types of Agapanthus. There's one kind that is evergreen, this is the one that most people in CA have, so this is probably what you were expecting. There's another kind which is herbaceous and will die back in the winter. I've never grown this particular cultivar, but since it died back over the winter and returned in the spring it definitely sounds like it's the herbaceous kind.
