Evergreen for 20" space-small root system?

Just removed two Bright N Tight Cherry Laurels from a 20" space between house and driveway.
Need a child/pet friendly replacement. No cedar (allergic). Full afternoon sun, zone is 8 to 8a and should not be a big drinker. Also they will be located against very reflective white painted brick.These shrubs/trees will be on either side of a set of windows and share the space with Big Blue Lirope and daffodils in the spring. Best ideas?

Well, I looked up Dwarf bushes or trees on Google once and found a place that sells dwarf trees, etc. I wound up buying a dwarf Golden Cypress tree or bush. I'm in Florida, have had that small tree now for 2 years, it only grew 2 1/2 inches, lol. Just can't let the soil in the ground become 'bone dry' for too many days for the first year.
