What happened to my Basil?

Durham, NC(Zone 7b)

My basil has been looking a little wilty for the last week. I didn't think much of it because it loves water and we were forcasted a monsoon. We got our 2" of rain and the basil still looked bad so I looked closer. The tops of the leaves are turning black and at the bottom of the mainstem is something white resembling foam. Sorry for the picture quality I will take better pics when the lighting is better. I moved the plant off the deck away from my container tomatoes, peppers, herbs just in case.

Thanks,

Vaughn

I strongly suspect Basil Downy Mildew to be the culprit here. Check out the links below or just google for more info. All of the conditions have been right for this new to America disease of basil to be quite rampant with our weird winter into spring weather this year. I'm seeing a lot of coleus affected by the new Coleus Downy Mildew, too. If you think it is basil downy mildew you can report it on the Cornell site second link below.

i've heard that it's almost impossible for a normal person to attempt growing Basil anymore because of this.
