Our church added a covered driveup on the east side of the building. We have a recurring water runoff problem on one side which pours down on a flowerbed below. I removed the bayberry that was planted there, leveled off the area, and planted a Korean Spice Viburnum off to the side of that area. It's just a baby, a foot tall. What on earth can I do to landscape here? Is there a plant that will tolerate these conditions, or should I place a patio stone there to break the force?
Landscape around water runoff
I'm not sure how close to the building your flooding is but I'd be more concerned with foundation failure.
I would first try to find a way to run the water away from the building area either by under- or above ground drainage tile.
HopeSue...can you upload a picture of the area....it is easier to make suggestions when you have an idea of the area/amount of space involved.
I agree with Yardener, get that water far away from the building
Foundation failure never occurred to me. The area is only a couple of feet in front of the cement entryway attached to the building. I will post photos tomorrow. Hey, that is another good idea, somehow funneling the water away from the area.
Channeling the runoff away from the building gives you options for planting....lots of folks are planting rain gardens to help deal with the runoff.
What are rain gardens?
A rain garden is planted to take advantage of rainwater runoff.
