Swapping & Chatting Ric & Holly's Swap The Last Week

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Tried to send 4 pictures in the above post--but, after 5 minutes, it never went.
Am I the only one having this problem???
Jen--all 5 of yours went!
We can hash about this at the swap....

To continue--with 2 more--which, BTW, takes 2 full minutes to send.

3--These are all the plants that I had for donner--from ME.
4--My car all packed up this afternoon. All windows and hatch are open until it will get dark and cooler.
Than i will close it up.

WHO gave me this plant??? And--what is it?

Got this at Sally's Pre-swap--Swap. because I had to move some plants around between boxes--
I no longer know which box it actually came from. They are in red plastic cups but have no name on it.

it was either SallyG--or greenthumb.

Here is a picture----Thanks--Gita

Gita - Those are Campanula 'Elizabeth's, there should be four.

Everything all packed in the car minus a few stalks of Artemesia for Chantell. When I just asked John if he had it, he said thanks for reminding him. He just went out to get it and then tomorrow we can just jump in the car and go. Yes, the Subaru Forester is packed full too.

Anyway......looking very forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. Everyone travel safe.

Thanks, david---

Then--what was that single, tall (18" or so) stemmed plant with some buds on it???
Don't have a picture----time for bed....See you tomorrow...

Is this social anxiety or just shear excitement? Hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Van is loaded. Holly, glad you don't live in a state where they inspect for 'plant material! Wayne and I will be getting up in about 4 hours to deliver almost a thousand papers so we might not be totally brite eyed and bushy tailed when we meet you all. ( And don't be surprised by our toothless grins as we haven't saved up enough $ for our new ones yet.) Have to water my plants and feed the cats and probably stuff in a few more plants and we'll be off. Headin North, yep, Our daughter says that if we get lost we should just keep driving north and bring all of the plants to her place in Vermont! Yep, road trip.

Via con Dios, my friends.

Judy

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Well my bitty car's NOT packed - LOL...but I shall do that in the am...everything is ready on the deck to be loaded. A few of the PB shrubs weren't so 'toddler' like...sure you folks that asked first won't mind...least I hope not. If it's too big just swap it with the person that asked after you. I simply can't wait to see everyone!! If I think about it...I'll try to snag some sedums...but not sure that I'll have time.

Ruby - you are so sweet...please don't let my requests be a burden or stress you both out though...ok? I'm bring a book for you to look at - I will scan it and email it if it's info you're interested in though.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OY! It just didn't seem like that many plants when I was potting up a few here and a few there, putting aside an extra flat of basil, tomatoes, etc under the lights... I packed the boxes as tightly as I could, stacked them 3 or 4 high, and I think I'm still taking up more than my half of the space... not to mention there are still a number of single (larger/taller) pots to be jigsawed into place. Hopefully I haven't pushed my luck with regard to broken stems, etc. Holly, I may have to make a second delivery run to get those big pots up to you, but we'll see how it all fits when Terri & Cheryl get here in the morning. 3 gardeners and their swap plants will definitely have our minivan bursting at the seams, but we just thought we'd have so much more fun driving up together.

A few things got missed, I think, because I just ran out of time to dig up "one more thing," but for sure & certain I'm bringing a lot of plants LOL.

I should have taken photos as I was sorting & packing... will try to remember to get a shot when I've got it unloaded at Holly's!

Time to catch some zzzzzzz's

Sweet dreams, everybody, and safe travels!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Looks like you are all ready to roll. I still have plants to dig. LOL But I will be up early. Can't wait for you all to get here.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Chantell, I had to laugh when I saw your have/wish list request from me for mints said "if available" Umm, yes, I might have a little mint for you. Or two. I stuffed a pot with white yarrow this morning, enough for several pots/spots if you separate it and let the roots grow a little more (they weren't pulled with the greatest care, but they're tough). My biggest banana broke its stalk during a storm, but it has a little baby on it, and I think it will probably re-sprout from the corm, so it turned out to be the easiest to transport in a bag... hope it grows for your nephew!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

packing up the car!!.. safe travels all!!!.. Michele should be here in about an hour!!!.. can't wait to see you all!!!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

hi Jill, got your request for the Yvonne's! I'm still digging up stuff this am!! No wonder why we are always fashionably late to swaps!! going to eat then load and get going. Hopefully we get there before the sun sets...ONK =)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Dear Ric and Holly!

I am back home----unloaded the car (NOT the rocks...) and will chill for a while before bed.

First of all--I wish the world could clone you two! You are the most wonderful couple and such good hosts.
Loved your gardens and all the good food as well.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!!

Talking about food---with all the running around to pack up and whatever--I ended up forgetting
the Tupperware container my seafood pasta salad was in as well as the serving spoon.
I know I had it--and I know I put it down somewhere....????? And--- there it stayed.

Feel free to use the container until we meet again. I have another....
Please take care of the serving spoon--as it is part of a set....no rush--but I do want it back.

Hope you all have a restful night. Clean-up can wait until tomorrow....

Thank you one more time--Gita

Home again home again jiggidy jig!

Ric & Holly, thank you for being such wonderful hosts! It was such fun to see all the new projects in person, from Holly's surprise bathroom re-do to the lovely new greenhouse. Joyanna is going to love meeting your chickens this summer!

BIG Thank You HUGS to everybody for all the fun chatting and visiting today.. and all the amazing plants you shared! We unloaded in the dark, but I'll be out there first thing tomorrow sorting and potting and planting (and then showering off a layer or two of dirt before church LOL).

Terri, so far I discovered I have a siberian iris that's yours... gave it a drink, and it looks great. We'll have to do our usual post-event re-swap LOL but I think we did pretty well keeping things sorted out as we packed. You and Cherryl both got special "call-outs" in Joyanna's bedtime prayers this evening (she wanted Jim to take her up, but I listened in on the monitor!).

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holy---

It was not green--it was a "cloudy-clear" rectangular TW container--and the spoon was inside of it.
Ric will know. he offered to wash it and I said "No"--i will do it..

I may have left it inside --or on the food table outside. I will also check my car and my crates of plants...

Thanks! If you do find it---just mail the serving spoon. The container??? I don't care if you want to keep it.
I have another identical one.

IF you mail the spoon--I will re-reimburse you the postage.

Ric and Holly, our expectations were high and you never disappoint! I simply loved meeting the people whose posts I've been reading! It really feels special to be part of tht group. Of course, the plants and food were spectacular, but the people really were the best!!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

What a wonderful day, it was so great to see everyone. Thanks Ric and Holly for hosting - your place is awesome. PLANTING, PLANTING, PLANTING, is on the agenda for today.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Dear Ric and Holly---

My "missing" salad container turned up in my car--right on the passenger seat...Spoon inside...
It was dark when I got home and i did not see it. Just wanted to unload the plants and get inside...

Sorry if looking for it cost you unnecessary time. Gita

Thanx to Holly and Ric for your hospitality. And to Courtney - what a gal!!!! Loved seeing the new greenhouse. An awesome job and I am sure will be enjoyed for many years to come.

Pat---

I tried to find the Post where you posted a picture of the Elizabeth. Could not.

Would you re-post it (them?) please? I would like to print it out....

David---or anyone else--Question.....

I have two,, pretty big, clumps of Astilbes--but they never bloom.
These clumps are what I dug away the divisions from for the swap.
They are by the shed (same bed the Monkshoods were in) but to the front.
Filtered sun...growing well---just no blooms....

Thanks--Gita

Here you go with the Elizabeths. One in the pot and one in the ground.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita - Astilbies require adequate moisture to perform well, and when the spring is dry ours do not bloom if we don't water them daily. Astilbies can be used in rain and bog gardens, indicating their affinity for moisture, but yours are in a raised bed, which makes this need more acute. You might try relocating yours in a low area, away from the roots of your maples.

Wowee!!!!!! What a day!!! Yes, I will join in to thank the hosts of this great event for once again opening their home and their arms to all of us. Again, one the top high lights of our year. So much great fun!!! Thank you to each of you who so graciously shared of your plants and other goodies with us. John just finished unpacking the car and I went out to inspect and boy did we bring home a lot of plants. Half the fun is getting home and seeing the booty. Every thing is looking good, and will have to wait until evening before we even think of potting or planting in the ground. We have yet another eating sort of meeting this afternoon as we are invited to a near by family reunion.

We arrived home about ten thirtiesh. I was able to stay awake for the ride home and was thanked for doing so, because it helped keep the driver awake too. We had a lot of fun rehashing the occurrences of the day and John sends word that he had a great time and sincerely thanks the hosts for another hit and thanks all plant donors for the plants. I am thrilled that he loves you folks as much as I do.

Anyway....gonna check the after swap thread and see folks thoughts on the day. You all have yet another great day...and wonderful upcoming week. Happy planting all.

Thoroughly enjoyed the day, thank you Ric and Holly for being terrific hosts(as usual) good to meet a lot of people I hadn't met before and see the ones I had. and SO GLAD Molly with there so my daughter had someone to play with all day!!!

Have to go buy some more soil before my planting can begin

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Pat--Thank you for re-posting those pictures....

David---
I had to chuckle a bit at your suggestions--as it is this same bed that you deemed the Monkshoods were getting too much water in....
They were just closer to the shed and, maybe, got more water run-off from the sloped roof when it rained, which can be seldom..

This "bed by the shed" stays fairly moist as it is shaded in the afternoons with dappled sunlight at the best.
The Maples "dapple" the shade.
Also--this bed seldom gets really "dug over" and amended--as there are too many plants in it.
I usually just end up digging up a small areas into which I plant a few N.G. Impatiens. They do well here.
In this bed are several Columbines--many daffodils and D-Lilies--Mint--a Lg. Pulmonaria-- and a Nandina at the left side end.
The right side end has my KO Rose in it. The bed is only 12' long--and, maybe, 3' wide.

The Astilbes have been growing here for about 3 years. A Swap plant......They may be too root-bound???
I would not call the bed "elevated". That is just bed-edging. AND--I have NO "lower area" away from the Maple roots
to plant it in.

You do not realize how small my available spaces are. My WHOLE development lot is 65'x100'.
On it sits the house and the patio and the shed and driveway, etc....Not much left for gardening....
I manage--but it is very limiting to moving things around or planting new plants...My ongoing woes....

Another "contrary" to what you suggested is my neighbor's bed which gets hot sun most of the day--
is REALLY elevated and only gets watered when I water mine on that side. She never comes around.
So--in essence--I have a garden and a half to take care of.

She seldom gardens...is fairly heavy and has pain issues. She is also still in a kind of depression
since her husband died suddenly last year. She is angry at him for dying. Kind of irrational....but....

I KNOW what she is angry at---she lost someone she was always "taking care of". Like--her reason for being.
She has always been the Matriarch in the big, Spanish Clan. Cooking and providing and raising all the children and G-Children
and speaking to them only in Spanish (from SPAIN). They all rely on her and come over and eat, etc...
SO--she has 'lost" her role in life--so to speak. He adored her----and she lived to care for him.

I was hoping these 2 Astilbes would bloom this year. Since they have not--they will be getting dug up and given
away to someone at work. I would rather have that space for some annuals...
I seldom get "attached" to plants. I give them plenty of time and care to see if they will "make it".
If not--GONE! And--NO! I am NOT angry at the plants....:o)

OK! A couple of pictures. ONLY 2 at a time.....Bummer!!

1--This is my house. My property line is just about the picture's left, bottom corner.
2--This is my back yard showing my Patio--where I live--. Left bottom--you can see the corner of the shed.

--This is the East side of my house. The raised bed on the left is my neighbor's
Our property line is, sort of, 1/2 way in between the lawn here.
--This is the West side of my back yard. The corner bed is what I call my "YUK" bed.
The BIG maple tree is the reason. My property ends with this corned bed on all sides.
--Looking back at the patio from my "YUK" bed. That is all there is!

Last few.......

1--The West corner of my back yard--with my darn Maple. The "YUK" bed starts just to the left
from the tree trunk.

2--This is my S. exposure bed. Not too many rots in it. This gets full sun all day.
My property line here is straight back from the center of the "Utility fixture" near the sidewalk.
In this bed I grow Roses and D-Lilies and all kinds of other stuff...
3--An Azalea you may have never seen. "Koromo Shukibu"--growing in the small bed by my front door.

Did anyone leave a green collapsible basket, canvas with aluminum rim and handles? There were beige towels and a medical type cold pack in it.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

What I left there, Holly, was a stainless steel salad grabber. If possible, could you deliver it in person so that we can have a fun "hang out" day? Vicki and her husband would like to join us here, I'm sure.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I had a few extra "Felicia's Phlox" (the heirloom from Jim's grandmother) that looked kinda like that, but I thought I managed to label most of them just before handing them out, and I think it's one you already had, so I'm not sure that's it...

I've got a couple of "what was that again?" plants out there, but everybody did a really good job of labeling pots... most of my questions will be about who gave me what, as I make up my "formal" garden labels... especially when it's a plant I was offered on the spot and couldn't resist. :-)

For example... who was using white plastic forks (and maybe a spork?) with black marker for tags?

It's fun to have so many reminders of garden friends as I wander around out there, and putting where I got the plant on the tag helps when my memory short-circuits!
