RAIN....Whoo-hoo!..........

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Unbelievable. There was a tiny storm that blew through ~8pm last night -- and it gave Rowlett 1/2" of rain. It was the only thing happening in the metroplex, and right over my house! I loved it. :-)

Hope your Peacock Russell returns..........he's just lovely!

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Sorry for the confusion, Russell can't return, he has joined the choir invisible, pushing up daisies, flown to the big coop in the sky.

(with a nod to Monty Python's Dead Parrot Sketch)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I am sorry, he sure was pretty.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, the dead parrot!

I can find my way around on a map, and find my way to and from the grocery store, the home depot, the Target, etc., but I still don't feel oriented about the east, the sun, the ocean. But I lived in LA for 2 years when I was learning to drive nd even drove LA-Boston once or twice. I remember being really confused because the ocean was in the wrong place. Or visiting relatives in Utah or New Mexico, same thing. The Rockies had been reversed. Very weird. I'll get it eventually.

So sorry to hear about Russell.. I am sure you will miss him. Any hope for getting new friend? I know they are homebodies once they are used to a place.

Our rains are gone for now with just humidity left over. I just got a heavy sprinkle... sure did wish for more. I am glad others in the area got far more and the entire state is having a much better year overall. I hope it keeps improving.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a friend with peacocks who had called me a couple weeks ago saying they were setting. Hers are quite wild and it will be a challenge to gentle a chick down, shame I don't have any young birds to raise it with. Russell was raised with a group of ducklings and always thought of them as his companions. We are supposed to get rain again in the morning, the farm is actually turning a bit green. It is amazing that we have as little water standing as we do considering that we got over 5" today and 4" yesterday.
My copper rain lilies are jumping up in the pots, even had one of my white rain lilies blooming in the rain today. Compared to where we were last year at this date, we are very lucky.

Amen Joy. The rains the past couple of days have been phenomenal. I picked up a copper rain lily in the plant sale this spring but I haven't seen it bloom (boo!) and the whites have sadly been sparse. I think a lot of the bulbs dried up last summer which is depressing. A few new ones appeared today so when they go to seed I'm going to scatter a little more than they have been.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

All of my rain lilies were taken care of by the squirrels, what a pain they are!!

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Josephine, I'll raise your squirrels with ravenous deer! For some reason they're worse than last year - and now they're actually coming on to my porch to eat my plants!! (I do have a veritable smorgasbord, but geeeez)

ARGH. Back to mixing pepper spray every night I guess!

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm sorry to hear about Russell. I didn't "know" him but have an interesting peacock myself. I know I would miss him.....

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Have your DH go out at nite and pee aroun close to the house- deer don't like the smell- tho I guess if they hungry enuff theyll come after food anyway.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Carey (and anyone else who is interested), I put mine in pots to try and propagate them, now I am seeing them, the copper rain lilies, a lot of places and will happily put some aside for you at the next RU. I also raided an old cemetery for some whites but found a different white this morning in an overgrown lot along with a pink striped rain lily. Both are in pots and I will be perusing places after the rain quits. Official total for Hempstead was 8.75" yesterday, just south of us in Cypress is a ton of flooding, they got over a foot of rain and with all the concrete and housing developments, it all went to the roads and into the houses.
Just started raining again but it is a small cell and the sky is already lightening up.

Off to get my spade and bucket,

Joy

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Joy, mine were in pots too, but they love to dig my pots as well. I guess I need to put some kind of cover on them.

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Joy that would be fantastic!!!! I'll happily bring you a nice sprig of "Spice" rose too. It's a pretty pale china rose that explodes with blooms in spring. (in fact, I should see a few new ones after the rains and I'll catch a picture). Have you started planning for the fall RU yet? :)

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Got a couple potted for you Carey, in between rain showers. Need to get on a date, maybe will revive the old thread.

Thanks,

Joy

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We had a couple more showers too today. Turned in to a real sauna out there!

Dallas, TX

I love the rain sounds! which reminds me I got a rain CD around here somewhere.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The sound of rain makes me have to go to the bathroom! LOL

We got about 1/8" today! Woohoo!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

soggy down here-rained hard twice today and is raining again outside. Pulling weeds, slapping skeeters, throwing out drowned maters, zukes, looks like the amazon jungle- humidity at 90% isn't unusual here, but the difference in one year is 100%... won't be able to stay up with the mowing-ground is too soggy to hold the mower so far, need webbed feet to walk the stuff...

Dallas, TX

Steph ... Enablex here! lol
It rained heavy here today and I slept through it. But I thanked God when I woke up!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I finally get to join in on the rain reporting... got 1/10 inch a little while ago along with lots of lightening. It came fast and flooded the streets. Amazing how so little can come down so fast and make traffic such a mess... it is welcome no matter how it chooses to arrive around here. I am holding out hope for the single tree I have in my yard... it looks dead but giving it a chance before we cut it down. I sure wish some of the rain that fell around Houston would come up here and fill our lakes that suppy us with our city water... now that would be nice! We need that more than anything else... water in those lakes.

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Rain all around again, but none actually at my house this weekend and up to today. Lots of lightning and thunder. Here at work everyone is reporting cloud bursts, but no significant accumulation. Still, we do get some relief from the heat in the evenings after the weather blows through.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

wish I could send some of this you guys way, sniff tests say Houston is mildewing, allergies are off the wall, and the skeeters are downright painful- wonder if Nile Virus has raised its head yet...hmmm. Is not heat relief to have 90* temps and 95% humidity-take a towel to dry off or a washrag to cool off, neither works very long...

Talihina, OK

no rain here in SE Oklahoma and today is just a supremo day bright with a nice SE breeze..i bees thinking that june and July swapped places June was bad hot and now July is fairly cool That too shall pass LOL

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

I had 4 inches at the house and 1 inch at the orchard over the last week.
I really needed more at the land but hey, it is July and I will take what I can get.
