Janet - I did! I had pepper spray all over my callas and dianthus and my cedar sage...(the deer have tried just about everything in my yard) so I repeated on Tuesday. My callas are bloomless again (dangit) so I need to spray at least one more time. *sigh*
RAIN....Whoo-hoo!..........
Rained here at my house yesterday for about 2 hours..glad cuz I planted a huge garden this year..Everything is so green..plus will have to mow again..grrr..
I keep trying to convince my husband that he wouldn't have to mow if we had no grass. He's not listening! LOL
Oh. Come on now. Yes, I sprayed again last night. And it's raining a slow gentle rain today. Grrrr. But the plants are loving it! I guess I'll have to start checking the weather before I plan to spray or water. I'm just not used to "all this rain"!!!
We got another 2/10ths yesterday and everything stayed wet all day. Humidity last night was 97% We usually have about 38% at night so that was really yuck! LOL They announced on the news last night that the city use of water was down to 10 million gallons on sunday from average of 14 million daily... saying people were not watering yards because of the rain. The city is restricted to 16 milliion per day total for the summer. No one is allowed to water outside on any day except tuesday... it made me angry that they assume all the decrease is due to no outside watering. I am using less water right now because of the high humidity and not doing much laundry. Things take FOREVER to dry... get musty.. I am waiting for it to dry out some before doing the laundry to save on electricity costs of doing it. I also am not cleaning the laminate floors as much with a wet mop because they will not dry fast enough and it is not good for them. Humidity makes a difference in how I use water in more than watering the yard. We usually have humidity below 10% in the daytime here.... sort of missing that part. Won't be long before I get that back... the sun is shining and the rains are gone. I did enjoy it while it lasted. The grass in my front yard is GREEN again!
We got 2-3" of rain since yesterday evening. Everything is really green. But I have a "pond" by my front door. Seeing lots of baby toads also so that usually means hognose snakes will follow.
San Marcos is probably going to get 1" total.
Come on everybody....isn't this soooo much better than last year??? Let's appreciate this rain.....I know my plants do.
I happily take the rain, even if it does mean 200% more bugs! I was able to do my front bed (finally, after several rain delays!) but I didn't need to worry about watering..since it rained! My crinums are settling right in to their new homes. However, my asiatic lillies did not. Boo! But I'll take the loss of a few bulbs for not having to water!!!!
It rained earlier and now the sun is out. Hopefully we'll get more. It's been great.
Wonderful thing yesterday.. I pulled weeds along my fence in the alley. The amazing part is these are weeds that have been cut down for the past year because the roots were just too deep and difficult to pull... now the ground was wet enough that I was actually able to pull them up root and all. there were only about 4 that were too big for me to pull since I hurt my back moving a bucket of water. I have pulled so many weeds with that wonderful experience of having the root come up completely intact. I love wet ground! It has been at least 18 months since the ground here has been this wet..... definitely enjoyed the rain. I am looking forward to the next time we see it again... wonder when that will be?
Glad to see all you Texans getting much needed rain!! I've read that with La Nina ending that should help with the drought situation in the SW. I sure hope so for your sake!
Doug in green KY !!!!!
Tammie, so glad to hear you got some rain out there in west Texas. May the greenery continue. :-)
Carla
We got a slow rain yesterday from about 6 in the morning till almost dark. What a great thing since we have had virtually none since mid March. I also enjoyed pulling some of the deep rooted woody weeds that are impossible to remove and grow into large shrubby trees. The farm was abandoned for over 20 years when we bought it, and it fights to return to woods when we do get rain.
But after the last three years of drought, I am not complaining. I have wildflowers that I never knew were here!
The Johnson Grass and Ragweed are really bad at my land.
I gave up on defeating it so I just started laying cardboard around all the fruit trees. I didnt want the cardboard to blow away so I started pulling up 5 foot tall Ragweed easily from the wet soil. They work great holding down the cardboard.
Using Ragweed to kill Ragweed. I felt a secret satisfaction.
We got a little overnight
& hoping for a little tonite
We picked up almost 1/2" last night with that fast-moving storm. I'm ready for about 3 days of nice, gentle rain.
No rain here.. it has been 19 days since the last rain and the greening effect has started to fade. I noticed yesterday that things are starting to turn brown again. I have been watering my yard as much as is allowed but once a week is not enough to keep grass green. That sickly yellowish green color is seeping into the weeds.... won't be long before everything is dead brown again... ready for the next round of rains.... fingers crossed.
Time for the green spray paint? just joking :)
I'm not sure what the official high was here in Houston today but my car thermometer showed 102 at one point, but definitely around 96 on a regular basis when I was running errands. Too hot too soon, and no rain since the 15th.
We had storms around us this morning, but we didn't get any rain. We do have cloud coverage, which is a welcome break from the sun.
Nice and cloudy here too. Two weeks ago we had that lovely forever-lasting storm system rumble through - all my (established) roses have buds with the first opening today. Starting to get low on rainwater though. :(
It's 98 right now.. expected high today is 103 but the good news is humidity is only 11%...(that is actually a little high for the norm around here!) bad news for plants... it sucks all the moisture out of the plants. It may feel better on people but low humidity is really stressful on plants no matter how much water they have available and when water is scarce.... poor plants, suffer they do.
Picked up about 1.75" overnight and this morning! Wish we could have that much every couple of days. Would certainly help my water bill and my garden!
Lucky you stephanie - even when the radar map showed us covered in green (meaning rain) not a drop came over us! :-((
We still have a 50% chance of rain this afternoon......thinking wet thoughts now. :-))
3/10 of an inch yesterday and another 3/10 of an inch this morning in my crazy Chinese rain gauge. It is raining again now, so that is a good thing =)!
It is north of Killeen and heading towards Austin.
Here's hoping! I sprayed my plants last night so that's pretty much a sure-fire guarantee we'll get rain within 24 hours!
Great to hear Terri.. I know how you feel Morgan... seeing all that green on the radar and no wet on the ground. We have lots of wind today but still no rain. Forcast is for possible scattered later today, that usually means someone else gets rain.
Last night we got a "wind storm" it was crazy, even a little thunder and lightening but no RAIN. Blew branches down, trees over but no rain, at least here.
Reading the temps is so interesting to me. The highest our temps have gotten is low 90's, the humidity has been a little higher then normal, about 50. Last year the temps were like this in April. The evenings have been pretty comfortable. I know it will only get worse.
Lisa - that lightning was AMAZING to see last night. We got about the same...last night AND today. Windy as all get out before the...well, I can't even call it a sprinkle...this afternoon. Starting to remind me of last summer now. :/ We just got reminders that we're still in Stage 2 restrictions.
Teri - what is "crazy chinese rain guage ?
Sounds ancient to me )8-E
Lisa = cmon think positive -
REMEMBER ! this is TEXAS !
No two years tge same ib a row = and
hurricane season got a head start -
so we may get unplanned by us
humans water
LOL! I bought it from one of those "sale" racks at Tractor Supply. It is cheap as all mine seem to break or crack, and made in China. I kept looking at it and thinking something was off with it. Then, after a few weeks I figured out that it is sectioned off in inches like a regular gauge, but the inches are sectioned off in units of ten. Thus 3/10ths of an inch of rain. The inches part is calibrated correctly as compaired to my other more expensive gauges that I have left. Crazy.
And so, the pesky metric system
rears its ugly head again ....
Lets start hoping for rain.
Forecast says Tuesday - Friday may have possibilities.
Amen Jujube. We're starting to get kinda dry in Austin. :/
Today was the first day this season that I really "felt" the heat. It was 97 in the shade on my back porch with 62% humidity. Usually I can work outside a little but not today, it got nice around 9. I think I'm going to get one of those miner's hats with the light so I can garden in the dark!
There was rain to the North West of us according to the radar. I'm soooo glad we don't normally have humidity here. I don't want to get use to it.
Much agreed. I moved here from coastal FL, and for some reason the heat and humidity bothered me less there than it does here. Maybe it's because there was always a breeze. Yesterday was just stagnant.
We have rain!! It's already rained about 1/2" and we've got more coming. I planted a couple of new plants this morning anticipating the rain. I sure hope they're doing okay.
Yes, it was stagnant yesterday, but i think it bothers me more due to age. : (
So glad your getting rain! Im sure your new plants are loving it. What kind are they?
We have received about 1.25" of rain since yesterday afternoon. The first wave was lots of heavy rains with lots of thunder & lightning. The rest was gentle and relaxing. It's not rained much since early morning, but it's been very cloudy and much cooler.
