Tropical Plants and Gardens #119

Blackshear, GA

Hi Franco,
Haven't seen you post in awhile. How is your collection coming along? That is definately a beauty!! I love the mednillias...I have 2 myself. I really want the red one, but so far no luck in tracking one down.

Hammonton, NJ(Zone 6b)

Heya! Thanks.
It reminds me of a fuschia and a tacca at the same time (two plants I can't seem to grow) so I immediately fell in love with it.
I pretty much stick to the orchid forum now. Considering I'm rapidly approaching 200 of them. I've ventured into the world of oddball and rare orchids and have since doubled my collection ...

Blackshear, GA

I love them also...had over two hundred myself. but two weeks ago the breaker on my GH tripped and half of mine got fried. I cried all afternoon...along with about 20 other tropicals.

Hammonton, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ouch! That's rough. The same thing happened to a good friend of mine, Chris Rehmann (former president of the AOS). It's a hard thing to go through. Just try to look at it as a new beginning and a chance to really focus in on your collection and make it something extra special.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

You are wise beyond your years young man. :-)

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Very nice that yours is blooming after so long a time Kay!

That is a wild looking plant with a crazier bloom Franco, good job!

Paula I agree with Franco... consider it a time for renewal!

Franco you can Orchid us to death; after all, it is a trop.

Thanks Elaine!

Awsome that it grew for you, Drew~!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Welcome home! Now, where are the pictures?!!!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Nice looking brug there Drew. Looks like it's got two stems already, so it should bloom for you pretty soon.

Franco that's a gorgeous plant. What is it?

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks Elaine... Meant to ask that question (when it might bloom), but something else darted into this flight-of-ideas brain of mine!

Hammonton, NJ(Zone 6b)

That's Medinilla magnifica, Elaine. It's apparently easy to divide.
Maybe this fall I'll have some to share!

I hope my buddah belly blooms for me this year.
I found the most beautiful bloom on my prickly pear.. finally.. I have had the thing for almost 4 years, it came to me a half of a pad. now it is a rambling cactus with yellow blooms.
The lilies are starting.
morning glorys have all been blooming.
Joe loves my Gunnera/and anything with big weird wonderful leaves. Now, that is a plus to be joeswife...
KayJones, are you ready for some weeds? LOL
you see, most of these get mowed out on the side of the road, so they are small and flat.. but move them to a watered and fed garden and you have big and rambling wine cups..very tall and lush white fleabane and yarrow.. bright yellow scurf pea, makes for splashes here and there.. the KNPS did an article about how I use KNWF's in my tropical settings.. I have red, yellow, white and pink yarrow.

Good morning, everyone! Deb, most of your 'weeds' won't live here - it's too hot and humid and they don't get the cold spell they need - I've tried growing them, but they live a short while and then disappear, never to be seen again.

Fleming Island, FL(Zone 9a)

My %#*& squirrels just ate all the new growth & buds from my newest hibiscus!!!! Left the others alone. Must be a new flavor.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

joeswife, when you say you hope your buddah belly blooms, are you talking about a bamboo? If it is bamboo you don't want it to bloom as after a bamboo flowers it dies.

if it isn't bamboo what plant are you talking about???

Jan

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Probably buddah belly plant aka Jatropha podagrica.

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Qwilter, Don't feel bad .... they scratched the s$%t out of my new leaf on the Monstera deliciosa!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Sounds more like a Jimmy Buffett wanna be, Drew.

"Give me two pina coladas, one for each hand"

Set sail from Salt Lake City, and never left dry land?

The irises there were pretty
