Blueberry Varieties

Staten Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Hello,
This is my first year purchasing blueberry bushes and I am looking for some help with some information.

Last week, I purchased two 3-year old bushes, about 4' in height, and of the variety "Northern Highbush" or "Northland".

I am thinking about purchasing another one or two bushes so that I can cross-pollinate, etc. What I am trying to figure out is if "Northern Highbush" and "Northland" are the same variety? Otherwise, it looks like my only other buying options are some "Duke" or "Patriot" but the one that I was looking at that looked to be the most dense with fruit and blossoms was this smaller 2 year old "Northland" or "Northern Highbush"

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I'm relatively new to growing blueberries, but I'm pretty sure that "northern highbush" is a type of blueberry, and "Northland" is a northern highbush cultivar. The northern/southern name gives you an idea of their growing zone, and the high or low bush gives you an idea of their growth habit.

In 2010 I put 8 plants in the ground and a few more in containers. I have Duke, Spartan, Chandler, Legacy (3 plants), Draper and Aurora in the ground. I think they are all northern highbush plants. I picked these cultivars because they ripen at different times, so hopefully I will get blueberries over a long period.

I've also got Top Hat, Sunshine Blue, Liberty, Sweetheart, Northland and two Blue Rays in various sized containers. The Sunshine Blue is a southern highbush, but is supposed to be ok for my zone. Both Blue Rays seem to be reluctant growers, but everything else is starting to take off this year. I have loads of buds on all my plants.

I bought most of the plants from Berries Unlimited on line. The variety they offer is mind-boggling and they were all either gallon or 3 gallon sized plants. I planted them in August 2010, had some berries on a couple plants last year, and expect to have many more berries on all plants this year. I have been happy with all of their plants, and have not lost a single one.

Good luck!

Katherine
