repotted norway spruce losing needles

We put our Norway Spruce Christmas tree outside in it's original pot and it seemed to be doing well. We read that if you want to keep them for another year they should be re-potted into a next size pot. This we did a couple of weeks ago and now it is losing it's needles from the outside of the branches in.
