At the end of april have upward growing shoots that started growing this year on my apple trees. Was wondering if I should cut them out now? They are filling in the tree too much and just saping nutrients from tree. Several of my apples are doing this and really making tree to full, and light can't get in tree. Most of them have first blooms ever this year.
pruning water sprouts on apple trees
Contrary to what the gardening literature suggests, water sprouts do develop into fruit-bearing branches. However, they often poke out at odd, crossing angles, so it may be preferable to remove some.
Thanks Altagardener for the info. I wonder if I could prune out some of these water spouts in my apple, peach and plum trees at this time of year? Because they are so thick with new growth. I think I may have over pruned in winter. Thanks
