I am going to plant a row of hostas alternating with hardy ferns in a full shade exposure along a wall over which the roof extends. There aren't any evestroughs, so the water would be beating down two to three feet from the wall. Will these perennials tolerate the weight of the rain and, if not, could you recommend perennials or bushes that would? Thank you.
Hostas and ferns planted under roof overhang
You would have far better luck planting things where rain will hit them naturally.
Plants placed under eaves get no rainfall and are particularly prone to spider mites.
You also need room to maintain your home, so room to walk behind anything you plant is a must.
Not especially what you wanted to hear but it is the best course of action.
Thank you for your reply. How about if I move the row of perennials out in front of the area of the roof overhang?
So long as the rainfall doesn't was the soil away that would work.
