Any advice on my aloe??

Sheffield, United Kingdom

Hi, there i have a small aloe plant which only had three small leaves when i got it. It is growing nicely and i still have it in the same pot i started it in. Recently a couple of the roots have started to pop up out of the top of the compost. As i think the pot its in is still big enough, i was going to re plant it a little deeper in the same pot? One problem i have is that i can see a new shoot with 2 leaves coming through right over at the right hand side of the pot (in the pic), i'm not sure how to approach this without causing any damage, and if i need to seperate these new shoots, im not sure how?

All advice welcome!

Thanks, Deeneezy

I'm not sure that it's going to like being planted deeper. If it's getting too tall and seems like it wants to fall over then you are over watering it. When the new shoot gets bigger if you want to separate it, then just give it a tug and plant it in a new pot. They are very tough. I just let them fill the pot and water about once a month.

NOt sure. Mine don't do that. They multiply by underground stems that grow aways and then send up a new shoot. I suspect that the white things have to do with that.

I had an aloe I just could not get to take off, it lived but would not expand. I figured out I put to much dirt in the pot and the leaves were rotting before they could form. So I put a layer of aquarium stones over the dirt supporting the plant but keeping the excess moisture away from the plant. Anything like that should work, stones, sand, etc. Now it has over grown its pot in hardly any time. I should have pruned it some but it definitely helped the plant.

Aloe is a very hearty plant and should be practically ignored. If you overwater it or disturb it too much, you will likely end up with a plant destined for the compost heap. Just put it in a window and let it go. Put enough water to saturate (but not over saturate) the soil about once a month to 6 weeks. As long as you have it in a good quality soil to begin with, it should do it's own thing pretty quickly. Good luck

I moved to Florida about 4 mos ago and my aloe plants are growing like weeds. I do not water if we have rain at least once a month. The pups I plant in small pots and just give a splash of water every few weeks. I have a question if anyone can answer..... why are the tips and some of the plant turning a reddish brown color?
