Spending spree #11

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

Peonies exude a sweet sap that attracts ants, and these ants eat the bugs that would otherwise damage the peonies. The most serious issue I have is getting rid of the ants when I cut the blooms. Sticking them in water is sometimes more easily said than done. Due to the cold snap, peonies have been in bud extra long this season. I still think they will bloom closer to their anticipated time (Memorial Day), but only time will tell. I am seeing a lot of ants on the buds, but they are not an issue.

The tree peonies were in bud for a very long time, and the buds were huge, but you can guess when they bloomed: mostly during the rain. The blooms were lovely and fairly large, but really quite sparse compared with other years. Shima Nishiki is unpredictable with its mottled pink and deep red bloom. You never know which will be mottled and the rest all pink. This year there was only one mottled among the three trees. The overall production was pretty but still a disappointment. No ants with tree peonies. I guess Mother Nature knows there are not as many insects in the cooler weather when tree peonies bud and bloom.

FYI I got some perennials at my newish local place where she grows her own stuff. After poking around at several places, her prices are competitive. But wow, did plants get expensive (I guess I didn't buy enough to notice last year). Now I see why all the ordering online!

Now if someone would just plant them for me :D

Was over my neighbor's and we were talking about gardening, she had 2 cleaning ladies in her house cleaning(her kids got her a gift certificate for Mother's Day) and the one overheard us and told me about a wholesale place that will let regular people shop there too...she said all the local nurseries buy from them, she owns an organic veggie farm.....guess I know where I'll be going soon

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Awesome news, Jen!

I have to finish digging up some things for the plant swap at Ric and Holly's on Saturday. I'll be bringing home 38 plants. My first plant swap and I'm soooo excited. Went to a seed swap before and the fellowship of fellow DGers is amazing. I figure this is one way to try new things and a way to bypass high prices.

That's how I justified going to my first 1 in MA at Kassia's

Those roots look huge! How great!

Every time I see good-looking plants from a place I haven't bought from before, I get sooooo tempted! Have to say no.... No..... Noooo

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Bluestone's spring clearance is going on
ordered some dark sedums for the berm and I think that the berm is done except for adding some more bulbs in the fall
also
Dianthus Zing Rose for my blue red and white container, cheaper than annuals

Just got back from a trip to Cady's Falls Nursery in north-central Vermont. It was a long way, but an awesome nursery with inspiring display gardens and lots of plants I have not seen elsewhere. Since I'd traveled so far, clearly I had to buy a lot to justify the trip! The hard part was picking. Ended up with Pinus parviflora Azuma, 7 or so succulent / rock garden selections, a dwarf Aruncus, etc. Below is a picture of the display gardens. More are here: https://plus.google.com/photos/116142583684410142720/albums/5746237994500933889
Be forewarned that they don't take credit cards, so be sure to bring a check if you go.

For my forbearance last week, I rewarded myself by putting in an order on the very last day of Bluestone's 50% off sale for existing customers. I'm getting 3 more clematis- Jackmanii, Huldine and Rubromarginata. I figure I'm already babying so many, what's a few more?

I'm also getting the late blooming DL Lime Frost for a section I re-arranged last fall. The theme is pale pink/yellow/white. There's a Fairy rose, pale pink phlox, white Martagons, DL's Ice Carnival and Joan Senior, Spirea Gold Mound and a few other odds and ends. Right now it's very blue with lots of Forget-Me-Nots. I have yet to see if the visual will come up to the virtual...

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Then, when the regular sale started, 50% off almost everything, I ordered another bunch of plants I had considered earlier but edited out. Tsk, tsk...

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hee hee hee Pam!! You are fitting right in here....FAST!!!! LOL

I bought:
Water Iris's to go down near the pond...."Darling" and "Fortune"
Astilbe 'Bridal Veil'
Atilbe "Color Flash
Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls' and another one that the name has slipped my mind already!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

visited one of my favorite nursery's mason hollow and came home with one hosta albiqua drinking gourd, three golden carex grasses, and one small conifer paul's glory - it was nice to walk the grounds with no crowds just the owners friendly dog.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I got abiqua drinking gourd from a co- op, but they are tiny so it's hard to tell what theyll turn into. Is yours full size? It sounds like you had a lovely browse...

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That Cady Falls is a beautiful place!!!

Lots of spending going on ☺

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

pfg they abigua drinking gourd is a large hosta with blue cupping leaves with thick texture - which i really like - had a small liner last year and it did not survive the winter so got a large one. last winter was the first year i ever lost any hosta liners - i think 5 or 6 rotted and died on me - still there are 40 or so out there waiting to be planted.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Got am email from Brent & Becky. 50% off summer bulbs.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

saw that...I really shouldn't look

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Thanks, wha. My Abiquas are liners and came bare- root. They've been in 2 1/2" pots for several weeks now and look pretty good. I'll pot them up again this weekend along with Two if by Sea which are the same size. I'm hoping to plant them out before fall.
Last winter was weird. I lost a few things I would never have expected to go. I guess the combination of no snow cover, the warm spell and near drought in early spring and the late frost was too much.

Cady's Gardens are very nice....I would have a problem visiting....I stopped at Edgewater Farm in Plainfield, NH this morning and bought Salvia discolor, s. Ultraviolet, s. Mystic Blue, s. invoculurata, s. Guanajuto Blue, & I think the tag on this plant says Palirum Limon Rose...I also chose a fuchsia with golden foliage, but I left it on the counter! Darn!

Thanks, Bill....and I do have Dutch iris foliage up this year, but not sure if they are oriental Beauty or Eye of the Tiger....lack of snow worried me, as Dutch iris is very marginal here.....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love that OB!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Deb - Classic Viburnums supposed to be real good. Got most of mine from Fairweather but they are done until fall.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

On vibs: Fairweather, Avant Gardens and Classic Viburnums were my three. Most selection from the last one. All the plants are healthy and thriving,

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I saw one site the order had to be in by yesterday at 9 am. I didn't get one in. Thanks. This will be for Davids garden because he has room.
