Two years ago I planted a Japanese Maple. Over this past winter my pup broke off the top. I've been waiting to see if any shoots might appear. It looks green at the bottom. Anyone think it may come back?

Broken tops may end up giving you some weird growth from where the break was, but it typically wouldn't kill the tree. So if it doesn't come back, there's a good chance it was something other than the dog. I don't know what zone you're in, but I know much of WI is pretty cold and JM's are not always the hardiest of trees and can have trouble in colder zones (some cultivars are hardier than others).
We had one that was damaged severely by a storm. All that was left was a stump. Now its more of a japanese maple bush.
Its not the tree it was but it has a new character of its own.
Cut the dead part and should give you new branches.

I'd be fine if it would just sprout! It's still green at the bottom (it's about a 3 foot stump right now). I cut some off but maybe I didn't cut enough. I guess I'll try that. It's near my compost, you'd think it would be happy.
Teko, a watched pot never boils. If you have cut off the dead bits, just relax and forget about it. If you've gotten nothing by the time summer is here, just start out with a new one. Bet you'll get new growth after a string of sunny days.
Yes, give it time. Patience is hard sometimes but it's frequently the only answer in gardening. It'll likely sprout faster if you just leave it alone.

After an unusually hard freeze, my Japanese Maple had a lot of damage mostly to the center last year. I trimmed the center out today you can not tell it was ever damaged.
My hubby broke off a Tamuke yama at the graft The root stock is usually a different variety, so I planted it somewhere else and had to go buy another Tamuke yama
I planted it and 2 years later looks like this
This is the spot that I put Tamuke Yama in, you can see the broken one in the pot off to the right
