OH my Nora is beautiful♥ Such impressive dogs! I agree way to young to lose your best friend :-(

Worrisome on the food recall especially from the so called "better" brands.

Anyone have any tips on how to tame a landshark? The breeder forgot to tell me Winston had shark in him...I don't recall any of my pups biting and mouthing like he is...maybe since Harper was a few weeks older when we got her it made the difference...Abby is 8 so I may have forgotten what she did...LOL but dang he is killing me. Hard to stay calm and assertive when you are in pain!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

and another reason for me to like little dogs... better get a lot of chewies Ronnie

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

LOL Allison! I have chewies in every corner of the house! He seems to like skin.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Wierd, my post just vanished unless it shows up in a minute.

I've read that for puppies that bite you are supposed to writhe in pretend pain so the dog can see your reaction and get the message that he's hurting you. They call it part of "soft-mouth training." I've watched families being ineffective by trying to say things like "no bite" when the pup tries to nip.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

we always give a high pitched "ooooohhhhhhhh" close to a dogs cry when they even accidentally get our hands when playing.. not sure if that's the right thing to do or not.. but it always worked for me.. they stop and give you that head tilt.. and usually kisses follow to say sorry.. but like I said I am not sure what the right thing is.. but that works for us

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

My post disappeared too...must be a Dave issue...

Don't have to pretend to be in pain I am!! I have been trying the "ouch" squeal, it does help for a nanosecond!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know the squeal doesn't work for all dogs.. I remember one in school with Lily.. for some reason it made him worse.. like a squeaky toy making a dog nuts.. just want to keep attacking it

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

You need to hold his mouth closed and say "no bite" very sternly.....they say that's how the mommy dog would do it when puppies bite her(of course momma wouldn't say "no bite")
worked perfectly with my puppies

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Lily just pinned the puppies down if they got out of hand.. not so easy in Ronnie's case

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ronnie, Brian's has a unique tactic he uses...but it works. Anytime a puppy bites him he in turn bites them back on the ear. ^_^

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL.. now that I can see!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

^_^

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Bet a bite on the ear sends the message! But then your face is down close, which could be scary.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

He holds their nose, says "NO" very sternly then bites their ear.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Don't know if I could do that Celeste but I know the mom bites back. If he gets to rough with Harper she will snap at him.

Thomaston, CT

If a puppy bites, you are supposed to stop playing with him, put him in a crate, & walk away....also, I read that you have to yip like a dog in pain....don't know if either will work, though! Robin was too old at 17 months.....Suey was 8 months, & never put her teeth on anyone...thanks for the comments about Nora....I still miss her!

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

I've used all of the above methods a time or two. Bear was trained on no teeth and gets it. He also understands easy if he is getting too rough, but he's three something now. I think how well any of it works depends on how in tune a dog is with their person and whether a persons words and body language go together or not.

My wife Fayrda and I have become puppy grandparents.

We went to our favorite pet store on Saturday morning "just to look", and Russell fell in love. He is now the proud puppy daddy for Midnight, a 3-month old female all black Chihuahua.

Here she is...

Oh, she's a real cutie pie, Dave....hope your son has a wonderful time with her!

Amherst, NY(Zone 6a)

Russell is 22 and still lives with us. We are all enjoying Midnight very much, even our two dogs and 4 cats. ☺

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

takes a real man to own a yapper like ours Dave!!!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Squeeeee! Sooooo cute!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Midnight is a beauty! Good luck with her.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Wish I had a little Midnight to ride on the airplane with me in my purse! This cutie steals a female heart, too.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Allison, I think they said that all those brands that were affected, the batches or whatever, actually were made at the same place. I forget where. Somewhere down south.

Marilyn, I always think of your Nora whenever I see the 2 gigantic wolfies being walked in Plymouth. Here are some pics of them, which I believe I posted last summer as well. In the first one Jerry is saying hello.

aawwwww cute

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I'd love to own a Wolfie too.

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

Nice looking dogs.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, Karen....they are lovely.....mine was smart, too....listened to every conversation, & if she heard a word she liked...like snack....watch out!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Smart dogs are almost like people, but more loyal. Tonight I whispered I was gong outside to plant and Cliffie came bounding down the stairs to help.

Thomaston, CT

Yes, they hear everything they want to!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think he just heard the word "outside"

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

What amazes me is how many different words you can use for the same thing, like "six o'clock" is one of about a dozen different ways to say "dinner."

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

every night I say.. ok that's it kids.. and everyone goes running for the door to go out for the last time of the night

Amherst, NY(Zone 6a)

I dare not say the word "supper" in our house. With 4 cats and now 3 dogs all getting their moist food at 4:00, they know. The cats start staring me down about 3:30 and every move I make after then causes quite a stir.

We also can not say "go for a ride in the van" because the 2 shih-tzu's are used to hearing that when they are coming somewhere with us. If dogs could smile, that's when they would.☺

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

It's amazing what the can retain. My first two Danes would run to the door whenever I would put on my black sweatshirt thinking they were going for a walk. When I was putting the blanket in the car or getting the suitcase from upstairs they knew we were going to the mountains.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Whichever shoes or jacket I am putting on tells Cliffie which door of the house to stand by. He recognizes any part of my gardening gear.

Thomaston, CT

When Suey sees the suitcase, she gets depressed knowing it's kennel time....she shakes all the way to the kennel....35 min. ride....but when she gets there, she's happy to see the girls......

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Last time I picked up Wall-e from the kennel he smelled, could tell they tried to cover it with doggie hair freshener...last time I'm bringing him there, he didn't stink when I brought him there he shouldn't stink coming out. Found out a lady I know dog sits so I'll def use her next time

Thomaston, CT

Oh, yes, Jen, they should have bathed him! Suey is always nice & clean.....
