Fertilizer - Chinchilla Poop???

Highland Acres, DE

OK - I have been reading up on the best organic fertilizers for my veggie garden and Rabbit seems to be right up there. I have a lovely Chinchilla. The food they eat is ridiculously similar. Curious if anyone knows if it is good to use? Thanks for your input!

Sure- cat an dog poo isnt recommended for anything, but all poo has different values- if you have doubts, try an experiment-one plant with, one without. I thot chinchillas were a rabbit?

I think what you have to remember is that no matter what type of animal manure you decide to use, cow, horse, pig, chicken etc, it has to be stored and allowed to rot down till there is no smell and it resembles a good quality compost OR add it bit by bit to your home made compost made from household waist.
The reason for letting this animal manure rot down is that there will be urine held withing the droppings, with rabbits, chicken and other manures this urine can be very strong and acidic, placed un-rotted onto the soil or mixed directly into the soil, it can cause the roots to burn / rot and will burn the foliage / stems etc if they come into contact with these.

Any animal manure (gardeners gold I call it) I can lay my hands on is stored away at an area where it is covered and can rot down undisturbed for several months and then I turn it over with the garden fork, recover it and by autumn, I lay it it on top of the cleared garden soil, this acts like a mulch and suppresses weeds and also feeds the plants it is laid around. no smell and here in UK the frost and worms take it down into the soil over winter.
This helps stop any plants getting frosted at there roots too.

Use whatever animal stuff you can along with there bedding straw etc, it's all good with the exception of dogs and cats, these can carry infection and worms too that can get passes on to humans if handled, therefore it is best to avoid this type of pooo.
Good luck. WeeNel.
