Fertilizer

Lugoff, SC

Some people say plants dont need fertilizer And some people do, which is right?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

dirt isn't food, fertilizer is, oak trees love sparse scrubby poor soil...cedars love alkaline soil- veggies want their own fertilizer specifications... different things can substitute for commercial fertilizers-cottonseed meal, dried molasses flakes, manure, 'green' manures such as clovers tilled into the soil before planting, depends on the plants needs what form of fertilizer may be used but plants need fed.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

You don't have to fertilize every year but, plants deplete lots of goodness from the soil as they grow and use up energy year after year to give flowers, leaves, grow taller, etc, so we gardeners have to help nature along by adding fertilizers, but as Kittriana has said, different plants have different needs and when you buy any plant / tree / shrub you should always try get a label telling you what the plants soil type, temp, shade, acid soil etc, needs this will teach you all the different types of added fertilizers you would possibly want and over fertilizing is as bad as no feeding at all, better adding feed at half the recommended dose till you know what your doing and why. A very cheap soil testing kit from the plant store will help you understand the different soil types for what plants.
Good luck. WeeNel.
